South Carolina women's basketball, Dawn Staley get 2024 commitment from center Adhel Tac

COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball received its second 2024 commitment, landing four-star center Adhel Tac, the No. 33 prospect in the country.

The 6-foot-5 Tac chose the Gamecocks among a top four that included Georgia, Louisville and North Carolina. She is the first top-100 prospect that coach Dawn Staley has signed out of Texas since No. 2 prospect Kelsey Bone in the class of 2009.

Tac missed most of her junior season at South Grand Prairie High School after an undisclosed season-ending injury but averaged 14.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game as a sophomore in 2021-22. She will be the tallest player on South Carolina's roster in 2024-25 if 6-7 senior Kamilla Cardoso presumably enters 2024 WNBA Draft.

Tac joins five-star Madisen McDaniel in the Gamecocks' 2024 class. McDaniel is the No. 11 prospect in the country and the No. 3 point guard in ESPN's HoopGurlz rankings. She is the program's highest-rated commitment since signing No. 2 prospect Raven Johnson — also the No. 1 point guard — in the Class of 2021.

South Carolina is still in the mix for several other top players in 2024, headlined by No. 2 prospect Joyce Edwards who is scheduled to take her official visit this weekend. The Camden native is the highest-rated recruit out of South Carolina since A'ja Wilson was No. 1 in 2014, and Staley has signed all five of the state's top-35 prospects since 2014. The Gamecocks also hosted No. 6 prospect Kennedy Smith, a 6-1 wing from California, on an official visit during homecoming weekend.

The 2023 recruiting class includes No. 13 prospect MiLaysia Fulwiley, No. 25 prospect Tessa Johnson, and No. 40 prospect Sahnya Jah. Chloe Kitts, who enrolled a semester early and appeared in 18 games last season, was the No. 17 prospect.

In 2022-23, the Gamecocks completed the first undefeated regular season in program history and swept the SEC regular-season and tournament championships. They reached their third consecutive Final Four before suffering their lone loss of the season to 2-seed Iowa and Caitlin Clark in the semifinals. South Carolina graduated seven seniors, including its entire starting lineup.
