SOMERSET COUNTY TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS

Watchung Hills 4, Bernards 1

WARREN -- Senior right-hander Jules Raymond allowed just a run on five hits, walked one and struck out 13, and freshman left fielder Riley Bobrowski picked up two hits, a run and an RBI and sixth-seeded Watchung Hills topped No. 7 Bernards to return to the Somerset County Tournament final.

The Warriors will take on top-seeded defending champion Hillsborough at 7 p.m. Friday in the final at Torpey Field – a rematch of last year’s championship contest, which the Raiders won 3-0.

Watchung Hills had two runners reach on errors with two outs in the first inning, but Bernards ace Maddie Lardieri got out of it with a flyball, but the Warriors broke through in the second with three runs. Madison DiSarno ripped an RBI double and Bobrowski delivered a two-out RBI single, before going to second on an error and then scoring on another miscue, Bernards’ fourth in two innings.

Tia Shikar’s RBI single in the fifth inning plated Ella Stevinson, who had doubled, making it 4-0, before the Mountaineers finally got to Raymond in the sixth, getting a one-out bloop single from Silje Emery and a two-out RBI double by Maddy Rivetti.

Lardieri finished allowing three earned runs on seven hits, walked none and struck out five for Bernards, which fell to 10-6.

The victory was the eighth straight for Watchung Hills, which improved to 10-11. A far cry from the 2-11 start that could have easily derailed such a promising season for the reigning state Group 4 champions, which suffered 10 of those losses to teams ranked Top 20 in the state.

“I really don’t think (this team ever stopped believing in itself),” Watchung Hills coach Brian Figueredo said. “You’re 2-11 and – I’m not an excuse-maker – but we were snake-bitten a lot of the way here. Obviously, we played some great teams, but all of the games we played, you knew we still believed because we were competing with everybody. Heartbreaking losses, unbelievable losses, a six-run with two-out loss, all these things, but the very next day, we always came back.

“This (winning streak) started after we lost 5-0 to Hunterdon Central and gave up one hit. The very next day, we came back and beat Steinert – a Top 20 team. So, I don’t think they ever stopped believing, and I obviously the worm has turned a little bit for us here.”
