Softball roundup: Cantu powers Abilene High past Midland Legacy

MIDLAND - Jazlynn Cantu hit two of her team’s four home runs, and Maddie Perez tossed a two-hitter as Abilene High blasted Midland Legacy 14-3 in five innings in a District 2-6A softball game here Fridya.

Cantu went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and four runs, while Bre Barajas followed with three RBIs. Lanay Carr (3-for-4) and Kinzley Cantu (2-for-3) added two RBIs each in the Lady Eagles’ 15-hit attack.

Jazlynn Cantu got AHS (13-8 overall, 4-4 district) rolling with a two-run homer in the first inning.

After Legacy (12-9, 1-6) answered with three runs in the second inning, Carr sparked a four-run third with a two-run homer. Tea Jimenez capped the inning with a two-out, RBI single.

The Lady Eagles broke open the game by sending 12 players to the plate in an eight-run fifth. Jazlynn Cantu and Barajas opened the inning with back-to-back homers, and they came back to hit again in the inning with Jazlynn Cantu contributing an RBI double and Barajas an RBI single.

Perez allowed three runs (none earned), striking out three and walking one in five innings. The game was stopped after the fifth on the 10-run rule. The win avenged a 5-4 loss to the Lady Rebels in Abilene.

AHS, which has won three straight games, plays Wolfforth Frenship at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Abilene.

Lusk lifts Monterey over Wylie

At Lubbock, Alexis Lusk’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Lubbock Monterey to a 3-2 victory over Wylie in a District 4-5A game

It was a scoreless game until Kat Martinez’s RBI double in the fifth inning, and Kynslee George followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to put Wylie up 2-0. Ryleigh Whitehead and Reese Farrar had opened the inning by drawing walks, and their courtesy runners came around to score.

Monterey (22-4, 5-1), the defending district champs, tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Lusk hit a two-out, RBI triple and scored when Tatiana Trotter reached on an error.

It remained tied at 2 until Ryleigh O’Brien doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh and scored on Lusk’s hit. It’s Lusk's second walk-off hit against an Abilene team. She had a game-winning, two-run homer in the seventh against Abilene Cooper on March 25 in Lubbock.

Anays Perez got the victory, allowing two runs on four hits. She struck out nine and walked three. The win gives the Lady Plainsmen a sweep of the two-game district series. They beat Wylie 14-7 in Abilene.

Rylee Moore took the loss in relief of Farrar. She gave up a run on two hits while facing three batters in the seventh. Farrar pitched six innings, surrendering two runs on two hits. She stuck out four and walked five.

Wylie (14-7, 3-3) plays Lubbock Coronado (21-8, 5-1) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a district game in Abilene. Coronado beat Lubbock High 17-1 to remain tied with Monterey for the district lead.

Lady Pirates silence Cooper

At Woodrow, Kimber Craig hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Alyssa Lazano tossed a two-hitter to guide Lubbock-Cooper past Abilene Cooper 8-0 in a District 4-5A game.

Lazano struck out two and walked three in picking up her second complete-game win against the Lady Cougars. She threw a six-hitter in a 7-1 win over Abilene Cooper on March 22 at Cougar Diamond.

Abilene Cooper (12-8, 1-5) didn’t get a hit off her in the second meeting until Lynette Aguilar’s two-out single in the fifth. The Lady Pirates had a 6-0 lead by then.

Craig (3-for-4, double, homer) and Jordan Barrett (2-for-3) had three RBIs each for Lubbock-Cooper (12-11, 4-2), which moved a game ahead of Wylie for sole possession of third place.

Summer Simmons took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in two innings. She struck out two and walked two. Jahlissah Marquez allowed four runs on five hits. She struck out three and walked one in four innings.

The Lady Coogs play Monterey at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cougar Diamond.
