Softball: Coldwater and Tekonsha sweep conference matchups

COLDWATER – The young Coldwater Cardinals continue to search for the right lineup with the pieces they have, and Tuesday night it looked as though head coach Bill DeBeau might have figured it out, as Coldwater swept Interstate 8 foe Pennfield by scores of 6-0 and 5-4 in varsity softball play.

Game one saw Mya Porter toss a one hit shut out on the mound, as the sophomore kept Pennfield of balance all night on her way to 13 strikeouts with only one walk in the win.

Coley Burkhardt packed the big bat in game one, finishing 2 for 4 with two triples and an RBI.

Porter and Mackenzie Searing each finished 3 for 4 while Maddie Moore finished 2 for 3.

Game two saw Coldwater break a 4-4 tie thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Searing, scoring Rylie VanAken, giving the Cardinals a 5-4 lead heading to the seventh.

Searing set Pennfield down in order in the seventh, preserving the 5-4 win.

Searing took the win on the mound for Coldwater after throwing seven innings, allowing four hits and four runs with one walk and six strikeouts.

Maren DeBeau brought the big stick, finishing 2 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored.

Porter finished another huge game at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored while VanAken and Searing both had multiple hit games. VanAken and TK Boyd both had doubles in the win.

Coldwater is now 7-12 on the season with the win.

Tekonsha slugs way to a sweep over North Adams

TEKONSHA – The Tekonsha Indians slugged their way to a two-game sweep over North Adams on Tuesday, combining for 40 runs in the two wins.

Game one saw Tekonsha take down North Adams 14-4.

Tekonsha put up three runs in the first, two in the sixth and five in the third, compared to single runs for North Adams in the first, third, fourth and fifth. Tekonsha out hit North Adams 10-4 in the win, although they did commit seven errors compared to four errors for North Adams.

Angel VeenKant took the win on the mound for Tekonsha after throwing five innings, allowing four hits and four runs, one earned, with five strikeouts.

Reagan Henry led the way for Tekonsha at the plate, finishing 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs while Carissa Shedd finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Also notching multi-hit games was VeenKant who added three runs scored; and Caterina Bauce who recorded three RBIs.

Game two of the twin bill saw the teams combine for 39 runs on 18 hits with nine total errors between the two teams.

The game was tied 13-13 in the third inning when Tekonsha exploded for 13 runs in the fourth to put the game away, with the Indians taking the 26-13 win.

Lydia Blashfield took the win on the mound for Tekonsha after throwing three innings, allowing seven hits and 13 runs, five earned, with five walks and four strikeouts.

VeenKant secured the save on the mound, throwing the final inning while striking out one.

Notching multiple hits were VeenKant who went 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and five runs scored; Henry with a single, two RBIs and four runs scored; Shedd with a single, three RBIs and four runs scored; Blashfield who finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs and four runs scored; and Bauce who finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Tekonsha is 2-6 on the season.
