Social Media reacts to Chazz Surratt’s controversial block
Week one of the NFL had a Controversial ending Monday night involving former Tar Heel Chazz Surratt.
The New York Jets took on the Buffalo Bills with the world watching Aaron Rodgers debut in green and white. That debut did not last long with Rodgers leaving the game early into the first quarter and would not return with speculation of a season-ending injury.
Despite no Rodgers, the Jets remained in the game, largely thanks to their defense forcing Bills quarterback Josh Allen into three interceptions and two fumbles. The game would eventually go into overtime, with the Bills failing to do anything on their first possession.
That is when the play that broke social media happened. The Bills punted the ball off to Xavier Gipson, who took it 65 yards to the end zone to win the game for New York. However, that play would not happen if it was not for Surratt’s block that opened the field for Gipson’s walk-off touchdown.

Once the game ended, what appeared to be a great block leading to the touchdown had some looking at it as an illegal tripping call that the refs just missed. ESPN’s John Parry talked about the call following the touchdown.
“It is big, but you’ve gotta put an asterisk on it because there’s a tripping call that was not made. “Parry said . “A trip, a leg whip, right near the 23-yard line, No. 55, which would have brought the touchdown back.”.
This uprooted social media as some defended Surratt, feeling like the block was legal, and others questioned whether it was a missed call.
Let us look at how social media reacted to Surratt’s game-winning block/trip.
Wow our undrafted rookie WR return man Xavier Gipson and what a block by Surratt! TD to win! Wow! #Jets

Another week, another Asterisk talk from the broadcast after a team wins. What are they doing?
Missed calls happen all the time! you can't put Asterisks on wins in the NFL
Also even if you took the TD away, they were in FG rangepic.twitter.com/UonqyqUhjShttps://t.co/nabxuS4Nvx

Immediately after the punt return…
"It's a great block and a good return but you have to put an asterisk on it because there was a tripping that was missed"
That's gonna be the new term all year for everything….asterisk…..so stupid
— Timothy Ray Brandon (@TBrandon84) September 12, 2023
That wouldve been a very very ticky tack tripping call. Lets relax on that Mr Ref Specialist Guy.
— Tone Digs (@ToneDigz) September 12, 2023
"They missed a tripping call, call back the touchdown!!!"
1-The refs didn't make Buffalo throw 3 picks or fail to stop an RB that hadn't played in nearly a year
2-Refs never cost any team the game
3-Even if they did, how many Jets losses have "happened" because of a bad call?

Hey @espn fire John Perry. What was the need to bring up a “missed tripping call” that was embarrassing
— Jeremy (@jeremysiemsen) September 12, 2023
Rubbing salt in the wound, a major tripping call was missed. Not that the Bills deserved to win. Just helps the sting.
— Melina Myers (@melinasphotos) September 12, 2023
Even if there was a tripping call, the Jets would have had the ball around the 40 yard line.
A first down or so, and they could win the game with a field goal.
No asterisk in my mind. #BUFvsNYJ

“Actually this game has an asterisk because of a missed tripping call” pic.twitter.com/EE31WFQdlt
— Alex (@TennantAlex) September 12, 2023
So they're not going to call that tripping that just happened on the Jets? Jets celebrating like they won the Super Bowl. We'll have at it. Good game. #BillsMafia pic.twitter.com/ba80vVss4Z

Troy Aikman is garbage. Dogged Zach the ENTIRE game, even when he did some good things, and then wanted a tripping call on the walkoff punt return TD. He can suck it.

Bills in the second half:
INT
Punt
INT
FumbleEek out overtime
Get the ball first and then go three and out.
But yeah they def lost because of some phantom tripping call

That’s not no tripping call 😂

Wanting a tripping call is pitiful behavior
— Fremen Jake (@Handsome_Jake_) September 12, 2023
The tripping call is meant for obvious and intentional trips.
This was not that. https://t.co/uzsvAoREK4

I see people crying the ref rigged game and missed tripping call on Jets game winning return. First off, too bad. Regardless of sport, no sympathy for blown calls. Second…how do you trip a guy who’s already in the air on his way down??
— Sean (@74_beanie) September 12, 2023
nice broadcast wasting this great moment talking about a tripping call
— will (@_W1II_) September 12, 2023
No dpi on third down, a missed tripping call on the punt return, its always because of missed calls man.
— Teddy Kurdziel (@tkurdziel12) September 12, 2023
Ehh that’s a boarder line tripping call. I don’t think it was intentionally done.
— 🏁 Living The Dream 🏁 (@Ghostbks1) September 12, 2023
No way we’re talking about a “tripping call” for a dude that was literally falling over lol. C’mon.

That's not a legit tripping call lmao ESPN just wants the controversy

ESPN ruining the vibe by talking about a weak tripping call
— Julia Sorgie (@JuliaSorgie) September 12, 2023
That supposed missed tripping call on the punt return is not nearly as blatant and clear as John Parry was making it out to be.
— ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk) September 12, 2023
Oh. Don’t kill the mood with a non tripping call!! Game over
— Chris McMonigle (@CMacWFAN) September 12, 2023
Ain’t nobody trying to hear bout no tripping call. Josh Allen was tripping all night and they lost cuz of him
— Carter (@mr_bcarter) September 12, 2023
People complaining about the “missed tripping call” are definitely the most fun at parties
— Ñic Gulas (@Nic_Gulas) September 12, 2023

What a game! Big win for Jets!
Great way to win the game.
The media dude who called the missed tripping call is an idiot.
That was not a trip penalty. Learn the game and the rule. Geez.
Not a Jet fan but happy for them.
Been decades since they been legit. Hope Rodgers is Ok.— CAMUSC (@Cammaui85) September 12, 2023
Here we go
Lions win has an asterisk next to it
Jets win has an asterisk next to it bc Josh Allen and a no tripping call
NO WIN ACTUALLY COUNTS WE ARE IN A SIMULATION https://t.co/u3liFwYVAo
