With former Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge heavily involved in the Utah Jazz’ search for their next head coach, it probably should not surprise that the former Celtics chief has brought in a large number of Boston alumni to interview for the job.

The head coaching gig opened up early in the NBA postseason when longtime head coach Quin Snyder announced that he would be stepping down moving forward. Since then, Celtics alumni from the ranks of assistant coaches (Will Hardy, Joe Mazzulla, Jerome Allen) to former players (Jason Terry) have been tied to the opening interview process, with The Athletic’s Shams Charania reporting on Wednesday that Sam Cassell would be the next such Celtics alumnus in the mix for the post.

Cassell actually cut his teeth as an unofficial assistant to then-Boston head coach Doc Rivers in the 2008-09 season in which he was technically an active player but played no games.

The former Boston reserve guard went on to retire from the game as a player to serve as an assistant with the Washington Wizards, the Los Angeles Clippers to reunite with Rivers, and his most recent job, following his coach to the Philadelphia 76ers.
