Senior standout in the classroom, on the football field is SJ-R's Student of the Week

In a close vote, a Rochester High School standout is The State Journal-Register's latest Student of the Week.

Senior Canon Bruce won out in an online poll at sj-r.com from Monday to Thursday.

He captured 48% of the 1,079 votes cast.

Also nominated were JT Alexander of North Mac and Macy Quinn of Brown County.

Bruce logs a 4.810 grade point average (weighted) and has achieved high honor roll all four years at Rochester.

Bruce is an Illinois State Scholar, member of the National Honor Society and Central State Eight Conference Academic All-Conference. He was a starter on the Rockets' Class 4A state football championship team and a varsity basketball player.

He will attend Vanderbilt University in the fall and major in biomedical engineering.

Principals and administrators from local and area schools nominated students based on academic achievement, leadership, citizenship, character, public service and participation in clubs and activities.

Nominees for the SJ-R Student of the Week run online on Mondays and in print on Tuesdays.
