See which Topeka-area golfers qualified for the state championship

The top golfers around the state battled in the regional tournaments on Monday and Tuesday. Inclement weather postponed many tournaments on Monday forcing a Tuesday finish.

The top three teams from Class 6A, 5A and 2A qualified for next week’s state championship. The top two teams from Class 3A qualify, too.

In all classes, the top five golfers from each region that did not qualify with their team will advance to the state tournament. The state tournament will be a two day event on Monday and Tuesday.

Class 6A

All six of Washburn Rural’s golfers placed inside the top 20 in Tuesday’s regional tournament hosted by Rolling Meadows Golf Club in Junction City.

The Junior Blues qualified their team for the state championship as they finished in second place with a team score of 49-over par. Manhattan won the team title with 32-over.

Camden Zimlich led Washburn Rural with sixth place finish with a round of 10-over, 82. Tagan Monasmith, Hayden Glynn, Tadd Armstrong, Tanner Kasprznk and Michael Wilson played well enough to help the Junior Blues qualify.

Class 5A

The top performance from the Topeka-area came from Topeka West’s Myles Alonzo. The senior won the Class 5A Regional at Cypress Ridge on Monday. He finished with a 4-under round of 66 to lead the field by five shots.

Alonzo eagled the par-4 18th hole to conclude his round in fashion. Alonzo’s score broke the Topeka West school record, too. He enters next week’s state tournament as one of the favorites after qualifying as an individual.

Joining Alonzo at the Class 5A State Tournament will be Shawnee Heights, which finished third in the regional. Shawnee Heights ended with a team score of 322. Emporia took the title with 306 and Basehor-Linwood secured second with a total of 316.

The Thunderbirds will be represented by Ayden Valdivia, Zack Hohman, Jasec Holladay, Logan Hahn, Jensen Crawford and Jaxon Shove at the state tournament.

Two other local Topeka-area golfers qualified from the region as individuals. Seaman’s Zach Weir and Bradley Williamson qualified. Weir finished in a tie for fifth place with a round of 77 and Williamson tied for 13th with an 82.

Class 3A

Hayden, Silver Lake and Rossville competed in the Spring Creek Golf Course Regional in Seneca on Tuesday.

The Wildcats punched their ticket to the state tournament with a second place team finish. They shot a team score of 38-over par which came short of Sabetha, which finished 26-over to take the title. Hayden’s Nick Gorman and Tagen Rodruiguez led the Wildcats with a round of 78 to tie for sixth place. Colin Scott, Jacob Padilla, James Kuta and Austin Bean also qualified with Hayden.

Silver Lake’s Bryce Badsky and Rossville’s Jack Donovan qualified for the state tournament as individuals. Badsky earned third place with a 73. Donovan paced Rossville with a fourth place finish and score of 74.

Class 2A

Lastly, Cair Paravel’s entire team qualified for the state championship on Tuesday, too. The Lions competed in the regional hosted by Maur Hill Mount Academy on the Atchison Golf Club at Bellevue.

Cair Paravel finished in second place with a score of 54-over par. It fell short of the title which was won by Salina Sacred Heart with 36-over.

The Lions were led by Rich Helmbold, who took second place with a round of 78. He was two shots off of the champion, Michael Matteuc from Salina Sacred Heart.

Helmbold will lead Cair Paravel into the state tournament along with Jase Pavlik, Caleb Cleverdon, Simon Everhart, Ty Gossard and Luke Budden.
