Sean McVay shares funny story of Rams fan heckling him at Lakers game for Super Bowl flop

Sean McVay has helped completely revive the Los Angeles Rams franchise in the last four years since taking over as head coach in 2017, leading them to the playoffs three times and making one trip to the Super Bowl.

Yet, despite all the success he’s had in L.A., there are still plenty of fans who haven’t gotten over the team’s embarrassing 13-3 loss to the Patriots in Super Bowl LIII. And McVay has heard plenty about that game from disappointed fans.

On the second episode of his podcast with Peter Schrager, “Flying Coach,” McVay shared a funny story of a time he yelled back at a heckling fan outside a Lakers game. McVay didn’t confront the fan face-to-face, and he’s glad he didn’t, but he didn’t just ignore it.

“I’ve had a lot of mean things said to me, if that’s what you’re wondering,” McVay recalled. “I went to a Lakers game after we had gone to the Super Bowl and I’m with my fiancée and we’re with another couple and we’re going out to our car and getting ready to go have dinner after the game, and this guy’s yelling at me across the street. ‘Offensive genius, my you-know-what! Three points?! Three points in the Super Bowl?! You’ve gotta be kidding me! You’re a joke, man!’

“I said, ‘Why don’t you come over here and say that to my face?’”

Schrager asked, “Did you really?”

“No, I didn’t say that, Peter! Yes I did say that to him, actually,” McVay replied. “And I’m glad that nothing came of it because I had some liquid courage and I was going to be stubborn, too. I’ve had a lot of people give me a hard time.”

Seeing McVay end up on TMZ for getting into a fight with a fan outside a Lakers game wouldn’t have ended well for the young head coach, so it’s a good thing he kept his head and only yelled back at the heckler from afar. And at least now he can look back at the moment and share a pretty funny story about it.
