Seals sweep season-opening tri-meet

Mar. 26—SELINSGROVE — After having their meet at Bellefonte cancelled on Saturday due to rain, Selinsgrove track and field athletes were clearly eager to get back to action.

The Seals got their season off to an ideal start during Tuesday's season-opening tri-meet against Shamokin and Midd-West at Harold L. Bolig Memorial Field. The Seals dominated Shamokin 95-55 and Midd-West 131-18 while the girls trounced the Mustangs 130.5-16. The Seals girls had a much closer meet with Shamokin, but they still won 78-72.

There was still plenty to go around for the Indians as their boys team defeated Midd-West 119-29 while the girls were victorious by a 133-16 margin against the Mustangs.

"I thought that they're really showing what they've done in the preseason to where they are at right now," said Selinsgrove boys coach Brian Catherman. "I think they've improved immensely from indoor to outdoor, really good stuff."

Derek Blair, Brady Deivert and Colin Melhorn each claimed two individual events for the Seals. Blair won the 800 and 1,600 races with times of 2:03.62 and 4:38.02, respectively.

Deivert earned first in both hurdles events. Deivert started off his day with a win in the 110 high-hurdles after finishing in 15.73 seconds. Deivert then claimed first in the 300-intermediates with a time of 43.04 seconds. Fellow Seal Carlos Stuter was the runner-up in both events.

"He's a staple in both hurdles," Catherman said. "I think as a senior he's close to where his PR in the 110s are from last year. 300s, we just have to get the time down a little bit more. But he's in great shape."

Fresh off his appearance in the state meet in the shot put, Melhorn dominated the field after hurling a throw of 56-feet, six-inches. Melhorn also won first in the discus with a throw of 154-1.

The Seals were also victorious in two of the three relays. The Seals' 4x100 quartet of Devon Mitchell, Noah Walter, Gavin Bastian won with a time of 44.43 while the 4x800 relay team also won first in 9:26.20. The 4x800 team consisted of Evan Dagle, Blair, Michael Andretta and Bobby Kruskie.

"My 4x8, they're running really well right now," Catherman said. Those distance guys, those mid-distance guys — they put in a lot of work. I thought they ran really well. The 4x1's probably our best time, even from last year I thought they ran a really good leg. We gotta work on some passes, but overall I thought they did a really good job."

As for the girls team, Abby Parise led the way with wins in three individual events. A retuning state qualifier, Parise claimed victories in both hurdling events with times of 16.73 and 47.79 in the 100 and 300, respectively. The Seals swept both events.

Parise also won first in the long jump with a mark of 17-1 1/2.

"She's just a very driven athlete, who is striving for perfection," said Selinsgrove girls coach Mike Stebila. "I'm thrilled with where she is to start the season."

Another Seals girl who qualified for states last season, Carly Aument, also got her season off to dominant start after winning 100 (12.85) and 400 (1:00.66).

Braelyn Heim (high jump), Grace Bingeman (pole vault) and Shakiya Stapleton (shot put) also won their respective events for the Seals. The Seals' 4x400 quartet of Aument, Parise, Lake Dent and Gigi Veach also won with a time of 4:17.00.

"Last year, our team had Carly and Abby who were definite leaders on the team as far as points go," Stebila said. "What we really didn't have after that was some depth. What I'm really liking now is with Carly and Abby that we're getting a lot of depth from our younger girls coming in too. It's gonna be a fun team to coach this year.

Both of Shamokin's teams also saw a lot of success on Tuesday. Benny Delbaugh was a double-winner after claiming the 200 (23.54) and 400 (51.24). Chase Pensyl (high jump), Logan Steele (pole vault) and Case Lichty (triple jump) were also victorious in individual events. The Indians also won the 4x400 relay.

On the girls side, Lexi Bressi (800), Kamryn Kramer (1,600), Chloe Masser (3,200), Carly Nye (triple jump) and Brylee Kessler (discus) were winners. The Indians claimed the 4x100 and 4x800 relays as well.

Midd-West had two first-place finishers in Ben Hummel (boys 3,200) and Jasmine Williams (girls javelin).
