Scottie Scheffler of NJ arrested outside Valhalla Golf Club: reports

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler, a New Jersey native, was detained by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning while attempting to enter Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week’s PGA Championship, ESPN reported.

Why did Scottie Scheffler get arrested?

Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but he continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance, per ESPN.

At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler’s car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, according to ESPN. After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler’s arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding and officer directing traffic, per ESPN.

Darlington, who was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained, reported that Scheffler turned to him and asked, “Can you help?” An officer instructed Darlington to back away, saying, “You need to get out of the way. There’s nothing you can do. Scottie Scheffler is going to jail.”

Scottie Scheffler PGA Championship status

Scheffler was released and on his way to the course, ESPN reported. All round two starting times were delayed an hour and 20 minutes, the PGA stated.

According to golf on CBS, Scheffler made it to the Valhalla at around 9:20 a.m.

Round 2 of the year's second major was scheduled to begin shortly after 7 a.m. However, the PGA announced a delay shortly after 6 a.m. and indicated that further updates would follow.

"The start of Round 2 is delayed due to a serious accident near the course," the PGA said in a statement. "The next update will be at 7:00 AM, and the first starting time will be at least one hour after an update is made."
