Limestone volleyball player voted Journal Star high school athlete of the week

Ella Karmenzind of the Limestone volleyball team was voted as the Journal Star athlete of the week.

Karmenzind — who earned 321 of 1,087 votes — posted an impressive offensive display in Thursday's match against East Peoria. The junior middle hitter had 11 kills on 15 swings for a .768 hitting percentage in the two-set victory.

Kainon McQueary, Washington football

The senior running back ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries — and helped the state-ranked Panthers (5-1) set a single-game school scoring record in a 72-8 victory over East Peoria. The previous best for Washington in one game was 67 points, scored in a victory over Gridley in 1929.

Nolan Orwig, Stark County football

The running back scored a pair of touchdowns to help Stark County (6-0) stay unbeaten after a 24-14 defeat of ROWVA/Williamsfield. Luke Rewerts scored the final TD for SC, which also got a clutch 22-yard field goal from Adrian Manzano to go ahead 17-14 early in the fourth quarter.

Raqi Young, Wethersfield volleyball

Young came up big in two matches last week. In Wednesday's 25-15, 25-23 win over Biggsville West Central, the senior setter dished out 17 assists to go with nine digs, three kills, a block and an ace. Her week started last Monday with 11 assists and six digs along with one kill and one block in a 26-24, 25-11 victory over United. The Flying Geese are 17-2-1 on the season and 8-0 in Lincoln Trail Conference play.

Toby Ulrich, Lowpoint-Washburn/Roanoke-Benson boys cross country

Ulrich claimed the Tri-County Conference individual title last Tuesday. The junior ran 19:31.85 in covering the 3-mile course at the Seneca Land Lab in Marseilles. His finish helped Lowpoint win the conference title, 31-58 to Henry/Midland. Wyatt Brown (19:53.50, third), Geno Addo (19:54.42, fourth) and Kody Knecht (20:42.97, 10th) rounded out the top 10.

Addie Symonds, Elmwood/Brimfield girls cross country

Symonds led the Trojans to the Prairieland Conference championship last Tuesday. Her winning time of 19:34.40 was nearly 42 seconds faster than the runner-up finisher at Macomb's Spring Lake Park. The senior led a pack of Elmwood runners that were second (Taylor Forney, 20:15.20), third (Olivia Stage, 20:16.30), fourth (Addy Turner, 20:56.10) and eighth (Natalie Babcock, 21:26.10).

Luke Martin, Eureka boys golf

The senior was the Class 2A Metamora Regional individual medalist last Wednesday. Martin, who won by one stroke, shot an even-par 71 with birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes at Metamora Fields. On the back 9, he shot a 2-under-34. Martin became the first Eureka boys golfer in program history to be a 2A individual medalist.

Ella Coulter, Peoria Notre Dame girls golf

Coulter's medalist finish helped the Irish secure a fourth successive regional title at PND's own Class 1A regional. She shot a 5-over-77 at Kellogg Golf Course highlighted by a 1-over-37 on the front 9 with a birdie on the par-5 No. 8.

Kayden Hudson, Peoria Notre Dame boys soccer

Hudson posted a pair of goals in a key 2-1 win over Big 12 Conference host Champaign Central. The junior scored a penalty kick, and then added at the time his 19th goal of the season. PND is currently the second-ranked Class 2A team in Illinois by MaxPreps.com.

Lily Furrow, Galesburg girls swimming and diving

Furrow was a four-event winner last Tuesday in a Western Big Six Conference win over East Moline United Township. The sophomore won two individual medals in the 50-yard freestyle (24.86 seconds) and 500-yard freestyle (5:29.63). She also was a member of the 200-yard medley relay (2:08.41) and 400-yard freestyle relay (4:12.62).

Alassea Michel, Dunlap girls tennis

Michel was a double winner last Tuesday in a Mid-Illini dual meet with Metamora. She dropped just one game in her No. 3 singles match, 6-1, 6-0 over Ellie Schaffer. Michel then teamed with Sophie Muir for a No. 1 doubles victory, securing a 6-1, 6-4 win.
