Samardzija activated from DL, will start Saturday's game

The San Francisco Giants activated pitcher Jeff Samardzija off the disabled list Saturday morning, and manager Bruce Bochy will waste no time getting him back on the mound. The right-hander is scheduled to start Saturday afternoon's home game against St. Louis.

Samardzija (1-4) is coming off four rehab starts for Triple-A Sacramento. He was put on the disabled list on May 30 with tightness in his throwing shoulder. An MRI at the time revealed inflammation but no structural damage.

Samardzija last pitched Monday, throwing 90 pitches. He threw on the side Thursday at AT&T Park.

He becomes the latest member of the Giants rotation to return to the lineup. Johnny Cueto came off the disabled list Thursday, and Madison Bumgarner made his season debut in June.

Samardzija's activation was among a number of roster moves the Giants made Saturday. The team purchased the contract of infielder Chase d'Arnaud from Triple-A, placed second baseman Joe Panik on the 10-day disabled list because of a left groin strain, moved pitcher Hunter Strickland from the 10-day to the 60-day disabled list, and sent pitcher Chris Stratton to Triple-A.

San Francisco enters play Saturday at 46-44, tied with Colorado for third place in the National League West. The Giants are 3.5 games behind division leader Arizona.
