Player Notes
Jeff Samardzija took a complete-game loss after giving up three runs in eight innings Friday against the Mariners.

Advice: It was Samardzija's fourth career complete game and first of 2014. He allowed five hits, walked none and struck out five.

Jeff Samardzija allowed just one run over seven innings in a 4-2 win over the Blue Jays, earning his first win in an Athletics uniform on Sunday.

Advice: Samardzija had just two wins through 17 starts with the Cubs, so he'll certainly enjoy playing with a much better A's club. The right-hander allowed just four hits and a walk on the day, striking out five. It was a good debut and set the tone for what should be a good second half for Samardzija and fantasy owners. He's got one more start before the break, which will come Friday at the Mariners.

Athletics acquired RHP Jeff Samardzija and RHP Jason Hammel from the Cubs for SS Addison Russell, RHP Dan Straily, OF Billy McKinney and a player to be named or cash considerations.

Advice: Parting with Russell may seem like a lot for the A's to give up, but it appears as though general manager Billy Beane is going for it all this season. The Athletics already owned one of the top rotations in all of baseball, and the addition of Samardzija and Hammel make them even more formidable, especially in a playoff series. In acquiring both Cubs hurlers, they also limit the pool of potential acquisitions from other American League teams looking for rotation upgrades. Samardzija has been outstanding this season, posting a 2.83 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 103/31 K/BB ratio over 108 innings, and should see his numbers improve with the move away from Wrigley Field to the spacious confines in Oakland.

Jeff Samardzija is expected to debut with the Athletics on Sunday against the Blue Jays.

Advice: While the trade has yet to be officially announced, Samardzija has boarded a plane and is headed for Oakland. He should see a massive upgrade to his fantasy value, going from the hitter friendly Wrigley Field, to the spacious grounds and vast foul territory in Oakland, not to mention the huge upgrade in offensive talent backing him.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Athletics have acquired Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Cubs.

Advice: The Cubs will receive top prospect shortstop Addison Russell in return, but other players and teams may be involved. It's a blockbuster deal for Oakland, who have bolstered their starting rotation in one fell swoop. It's clear that they are going for the gold this year.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Cubs and Athletics are in serious talks on a potential big trade.

Advice: The Athletics are in need of rotation help, and the Cubs are actively shopping Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, so there could very easily be a match here. Rosenthal also notes that A's top prospect Addison Russell has been discussed in a potential deal with the Cubs.
