Roundup: St. Mary, JoBurg girls continue winning streaks on the court

GAYLORD ― After the brief holiday break, high school sports are back in full swing in Northern Michigan in 2024.

Well, sort of.

The new year has brought the first major snowstorms of the winter season to the Northern Lower Peninsula and, subsequently, the first round of major cancelations to local sporting events. Still, teams from Gaylord, St. Mary and Johannesburg-Lewiston have all been hard at work this week, getting in games before the big storm hits this weekend.

Gaylord boys still struggling to find footing

The Gaylord boys basketball team is 0-3 in the new year, dropping games to Petoskey (62-59), Sault Ste Marie (71-59) and most recently Cadillac (59-47) since returning from break.

Senior Luke Gelow is still finding success despite the team's struggles, leading all scorers with 38 points against Petoskey and 32 points against Sault.

Gaylord is scheduled to play at St. Ignace on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

St. Mary girls pick up another runaway win

The Gaylord St. Mary girls have picked up two blowout wins since returning from break, most recently winning a Ski Valley Conference matchup 52-19 over Mancelona.

Sophomore Kaylee Jeffers led the way with 23 points and 5 assists while fellow sophomore Payton Glasby had 15 points and 4 assists.

After Tuesday's matchup with Onaway was postponed, the GSM girls won't play again until Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Central Lake.

JoBurg girls extend winning streak to four games

A rocky start to the season for the Johannesburg-Lewiston girls basketball has been steadied to this point as the Cardinals are now riding a four-game winning streak after their latest victory, a 46-22 Ski Valley Conference victory over Central Lake.

Jayden Marlatt led the way with 17 points, 6 steals and 2 assists while Brittney Fox had 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

JoBurg is at Bellaire on Wednesday, Jan. 17 before their first scheduled meeting with Gaylord St. Mary on Friday, Jan. 19.

Gaylord wrestling stout again in conference victories

The Gaylord wrestling team was back to its dominant ways on Wednesday. picking up two more conference victories over Alpena (75-6) and Cadillac (60-21).

Luka Lehre, Sunni LaFond, Jason Cranick, Jaron Bensinger, Keiren Beach, Blake Davis, Dylan Boucher, Logan Wolf and Caden Sides all finished the night with wins against both teams.

With this weekend's matches canceled, Gaylord will travel to Petoskey on Wednesday, Jan. 17 for their next action.
