Roundup: St. Mary, JoBurg battle through important matchups amid weather cancellations

GAYLORD ― It may have been tough keeping up with high school sports around Gaylord in the past few weeks.

With all the snow that has finally arrived in Northern Michigan, high school sports teams in the Gaylord area have had to adjust to cancelations and schedule changes. Still, teams have been hard at work getting into the most important games on their schedules as the postseason draws closer and closer.

Here is what you may have missed this week in Gaylord area sports:

St. Mary boys fall to Inland Lakes, rebound with win over JoBurg

The Gaylord St. Mary boys are looking to get back into the Ski Valley conference title race as they play some of their most important games in the upcoming weeks.

This past week, they finished with mixed results, falling to Inland Lakes 51-38 on Tuesday, Jan. 16 before defeating Johannesburg-Lewiston 47-36 on Thursday, Jan. 18.

Rylan Matelski led the team with 16 points in the loss at IL while Daniel Jacobson had 23 in the win over JoBurg. Thomas Fox had 15 points for the Cardinals.

GSM (7-4, 5-3 SVC) is at Forest Area on Tuesday, Jan. 23. JoBurg (2-11, 2-6 SVC) host Mancelona on Thursday, Jan. 25.

The GSM girls extended their winning streak to four games on Wednesday, Jan. 17 while JoBurg extended its winning streak to five games.

The GSM girls kept to their winning ways this week, defeating Central Lake 49-15 on Wednesday, Jan. 17 for their fourth-straight victory.

Kaylee Jeffers led the team with 22 points on six made 3-pointers along with 8 rebounds. Payton Glasby had 15 points and 9 rebounds while Miriam Murrell had 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Meanwhile, JoBurg extended its winning streak to five games on Wednesday as well, beating Bellaire 46-22 for their its third SVC win of the season.

Brittney Fox led the ways with 19 points. 4 steals and 3 assists. Yolanda Gascho scored 11 points while Jayden Marlatt had 4 points, 6 assists, 3 steals and 8 rebounds.

GSM (6-3, 5-1 SVC) and JoBurg (5-4, 3-2 SVC) will put those winning streaks on the line when they meet up for the first rivalry matchup of the season on Friday, Jan. 19 in Gaylord.

McDonald leads Gaylord girls to victory in trip over the bridge

The Gaylord girls basketball team bounced back from a loss to Midland in their last time out, traveling to the Upper Peninsula to defeat St. Ignace 65-56 on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Sophomore Addison McDonald led the way with a career-high 29 points. Fellow sophomore Karlee Pretzlaff had 15 points.

Gaylord (5-5, 1-2 Big North) is playing in the Cadillac Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 20 before getting back to BNC play on Jan. 24 against TC West.
