Roundup: Cutliff leads Newark boys track to title at Mount Vernon

Daniel Cutliff won two events and was a part of a winning relay Friday, leading the Newark boys track team to the championship during Mount Vernon's Jacket Invitational.

Cutliff won the 100 (11.53) and 200 (23.39) and joined Roy Price, Darnell Cleaves and Camden Booker on the winning 400 relay (45.01) for the Wildcats, who totaled 90 points, edging the host Yellow Jackets by three.

Other winners for the Wildcats were Price in the 110 hurdles (15.78), Cleaves in the 300 hurdles (41.42), Sean Brechbill, Brayden Dowell, Jayden Flores and Luca Stukey in the 3,200 relay (8:46.15) and Ayden Bidwell in the discus (142-feet-11).

In the girls meet, Cadiera Gordon won the 100 (13.01) and joined Allie Schaller, Sophia Walters and Aubree Murphy on the winning 800 relay (1:51.29), leading Newark to a runner-up finish. The Wildcats totaled 58 points, trailing the Yellow Jackets' 121.5.

Other winners for the Wildcats were Meredith Pyle in the 3,200 (12:36.58) and Emma Ray in the long jump (15-7). Utica's Maddy Scarberry won the high jump (4-11).

Watkins boys take runner-up

The Watkins Memorial boys won four events and totaled 82 points to finish runner-up in Upper Arlington's Larkin & Crosten Classic. The Warriors finished behind Logan's 106.33.

Winning for the Warriors were John Apel in the 400 (48.62), Adam Brazier in the 800 (1:57.67), Apel, Brazier, Joe McIntosh and Elijah Hardiman in the 800 relay (1:28.48) and Tommy Robinson in the high jump (6-2).

BOYS TENNIS

Granville still perfect

Samuel Pfau rallied for a three-set victory at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0, to complete Granville's 5-0 sweep of Westerville North.

Purin Songrug (6-1, 6-0) at No. 2 and Alex Organ (6-0, 6-1) at No. 3 also won singles matches for the Blue Aces (16-0). Jacob Lucas-Miller and Ali Davidoff (6-3, 6-2) at No. 1 and Kevin Wu and Ben Prokop (6-0, 6-4) at No. 2 won doubles matches.

BOYS LACROSSE

Newark cruises

Matt Johnson eclipsed 500 saves for his career, making 10 in Newark's 16-1 victory against visiting Licking Valley (1-14).

Max Frost scored a team-high five goals for the Wildcats (7-7). Drayson Peterson added four goals and three assists, Austin Reed a goal and four assists and Eli Justice, Ricky Frazier and Oheneba Asensio two goals each.

Johnstown wins

McKaden Thomas totaled seven goals and three assists in Johnstown's 20-1 victory against visiting Lima Senior.

Will Taylor added five goals and four assists, James Swick four goals, A.J. Hollis two goals and Logan Brown and Jason Hettinger one apiece for the Johnnies (8-5). Ben Smith made three saves.

SOFTBALL

Heath wins at Lakewood

Kyndall Spicer's two-run double in the top of the seventh inning was the tiebreaking hit in Heath's 12-7 victory at Lakewood in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.

Spicer recorded two hits and three runs for the Bulldogs (13-10, 8-7). Kylie Green added three hits, two runs and three RBIs, Sydney Cottrell two hits and three RBIs and Savannah Lawson a hit, three runs and an RBI

Dani Stewart homered and drove in four runs for the Lancers (11-9, 7-7). Cora Redman added two hits, a run and an RBI and Riley Williams a double and two runs.

Utica nips Northridge

Emily Meyers homered and tripled as a part of a 3-for-3 performance, scoring two runs and driving in two for Utica in a 6-5 victory at Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.

Lexi Wiegand and Kaitlin Evans each homered for Utica (9-11, 7-8) with Wiegand also doubling and scoring a second run. Cheyenne Smith scattered nine hits and stranded the tying run at second base in the seventh inning.

Camryn Moore, who drove in three runs, and Kaitlyn Angus each homered for the Vikings (4-18, 2-13). Addison Moore added two hits and a run and Kadance Adkins a hit and a run.

Granville wins

Megan Lodge hit two home runs and drove in seven runs in Granville's 18-0 victory at Zanesville (0-21, 0-14) in LCL-Buckeye play.

Emily Travis added a solo home run and three runs, Avary King two doubles, two runs and two RBIs and Taylor Warehime and Ally Ernsberger a combined five hits and six RBIs for the Blue Aces (22-3, 12-2). Lodge also struck out nine without a walk in a five-inning three-hit shutout.

Liberty drops road game

Jersey Snyder doubled twice in a three-hit performance, scored twice and drove in a run for Liberty Christian in an 18-10 defeat at Shekinah Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Carolee Marcum added a triple, two runs and three RBIs, Audrey Soliday two hits and an RBI and Madelynn Cox a hit and two runs for the Eagles (0-10, 0-8). Snyder also struck out four and allowed two earned runs in 4⅔ innings of relief.

BASEBALL

Utica wins at Northridge

Aidyn Burgess recorded two hits, a run and three RBIs, fueling Utica in an 11-5 victory at Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.

Roman Gamble added two hits, two runs and an RBI, Gavin Tussey two hits, including a triple, and two runs, Isaak Wogan two hits, including a double, and a run and Gavin Chinn a triple, a run and two RBIs for Utica (11-10, 9-5). Connor Staugh struck out four in two hitless innings of relief.

Braxton Ankrom led the Vikings (1-22, 0-14) with two hits, a run and two RBIs. Logan Howiler added a hit, two runs and an RBI, David Carr two hits and a run and Dain LeValley a hit and an RBI.

NC blanks Johnstown

Cooper Leibas had two hits, including a triple, and four RBIs and struck out seven in a five-inning one-hit shutout from the mound for Newark Catholic in an 11-0 victory at Johnstown in LCL-Cardinal play.

Troy Johnston added three hits, including a double, three runs and an RBI, Bryan McAnally two hits, two runs and two RBIs, Miller Hutchison a hit, two runs and an RBI and Nate Willis a hit and an RBI for the Green Wave (9-11, 7-8).

Jacob Myers and Landon Myers each singled for the Johnnies (6-14, 4-10).

Granville wins on road

Gavin Vradenburg notched three hits, three runs and an RBI, sparking Granville in an 11-5 victory at Zanesville (5-15, 2-11).

Jakob Culver added three hits and two runs, Jake Johnson two hits, a run and three RBIs, Wilson Wells two hits, two runs and an RBI and Chase Holtzapple two hits and a run for the Blue Aces (11-9, 7-6). Caden Rosendahl and Jackson McMillan combined for seven strikeouts.
