Richard Sherman reportedly wants to play for the Patriots
The curious case of Seahawks’ cornerback Richard Sherman continues as the draft is in full swing. According to CSNNE’s Tom Curran, Sherman wants to be traded to the New England Patriots.
“My understanding is he wants to be a New England Patriot,” said Curran on Wednesday. “He wants to leave Seattle. He has made that clear and that’s why Seahawks’ GM John Schneider can speak so freely about it. They’ve had it up to here with him. His tirades on the sidelines last year were a tremendous distraction”
It was reported just a few weeks ago by Curran himself that the Patriots didn’t have any interest in a trade for the perennial pro-bowler so the interest may be solely on Sherman’s side. However, the rumor keeps popping up and in some cases, where there’s smoke there’s fire.

Seeing as the Patriots hold no picks in the first two rounds, it seems very likely in order to make a trade work a player must be involved. Naturally, Butler’s name will pop-up as an obvious start for the Patriots and a swap of the two could be a win-win situation for both teams.
Early reports suggested that the Seahawks were adamant about getting two high draft picks in return for Sherman so if that is still the case then the Patriots will most certainly be out of the running due to the lack-of assets (draft picks) and a propensity to not waste high draft picks on aging veterans. However, if the price-tag has dropped since the beginning of April, then perhaps trade talks heat-up over the weekend as the draft progresses.
Sherman started all 16-games for the Seahawks in 2016, racking up 38 tackles and four interceptions on the year but was noticeably distraught on the sidelines at times during the season. Butler also played all 16-games for the Patriots and had 48 tackles, 13 assisted, and four interceptions in the pro-bowl campaign.
However you slice it, the Patriots are working from a position of strength. They do not need to trade Malcolm Butler. If they don’t get Richard Sherman, they still have arguably the best secondary in the league which means the only way the Patriots have Sherman on the roster in 2017 is if the Seahawks are so desperate to rid themselves of him that they drop the price tag.
