The Rewind: East volleyball stays unbeaten, Service football continues to roll and Alaskans in NFL make debuts
Sep. 12—Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska's world of sports.
The fifth week of the 2023 Alaska high school football season saw the last unbeaten team at the Division I level suffer its first loss of the season, another dominant performance by a Division II powerhouse and an emerging contender continue to heat up in Division III. On the college sports scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team didn't find any success on the road in Fairbanks over the weekend but a trio of cross-country runners did. On the national stage, three Alaskans were on NFL teams that won their regular-season openers, a professional hoopster came up clutch and a rising junior hockey star impressed in preseason action.
Headlines and highlights
The Dimond football team was off to its hottest start in nearly a decade and had everything to play for on Saturday night, including an unbeaten record and first place in the Cook Inlet Conference standings. None of that mattered to visiting Service as the Cougars forced nine turnovers, including a staggering six interceptions in an upset victory.
"We looked at Juneau (film) and saw that they had a tight game with (Dimond) and we knew that we were the stronger team," said junior safety Milo Tremblay, who led the team with two interceptions. "I think we showed it tonight."

Elsewhere in Division I action, Bettye Davis East avoided having its homecoming spoiled by narrowly edging reigning state champion Colony in a three-point victory while West got back on track with a road rout of Bartlett. Juneau claimed its first win of the season down in Washington and South squeaked by Chugiak to win back-to-back games for the first time since 2020.
At the Division II level, Soldotna is now one of only two undefeated teams in the state after steamrolling Wasilla and eclipsing 60 points for the fourth week in a row. Eagle River suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of two-time defending champion Lathrop.
In Division III, Barrow stayed hot and recorded its third straight win with a 60-point shutout of Redington.
Seward remains the only other unbeaten team, continuing to dominate 9-man football with a lopsided shutout win over Valdez.
Three-time reigning Cook Inlet Conference flag football champion Dimond remained undefeated through the first four weeks of the season with a pair of shutout victories for the second week in a row. The first came against Eagle River on Tuesday night and the second came over Service on Saturday by a slightly wider margin as the Lynx finished the week with a point differential of 39-0.
After sweeping its first four opponents in three sets, East was forced to go the distance with defending Division I state champion Dimond on Wednesday. The Thunderbirds won the first two sets in dramatic fashion, lost the next two sets but were able to prevent the Lynx from completing their rally by winning the fifth. It marked the program's first victory over the perennial Cook Inlet Conference powerhouse since the 2019 season and improved its record to 5-0.
"I think this sends the message that East is here and we're here to win," said East junior hitter Jirah Boma, who led the team in kills with 15 and recorded five aces.

In other prep volleyball action, Service swept reigning 2022 state runner-up West on Friday in three sets. The Cougars were led in kills by Paige Miller and Patri Ferran, who tied with 10 each. Rylie Widener and Heida Young each had 12 digs. Other team leaders were Kiara Iloilo (13 assists) and Lily Ruiz (five blocks).
The annual Palmer Invite, one of the biggest cross-country meets of the season, took place out in the Mat-Su Valley on Saturday. The top 10 in the girls division surprisingly wasn't dominated by defending champion Chugiak. While the Mustangs still had the most top finishers and even occupied the top two spots just out of the top 10, first place was claimed by Morgan Ainsworth (19:41.36) of Colony. Coming in second and third were Tania Boonstra (19:44.27) of Soldotna, who finished second in state last year, followed by Hannah Shaha (19:44.90) of Chugiak.
On the boys side, a pair of Grace Christian Grizzlies claimed two of the top three spots with Robbie Annett (16:18.24) finishing first and Simon Nelson (16:54.90) coming in third. Fischer Adams (16:22.51) of Palmer was wedged in between in second place.
The South girls swimming team narrowly beat a resurgent Eagle River squad with an overall team score of 83-79 on Friday, thanks in larger part to their impressive depth. The Wolverines had at least a pair of top-three finishers in either relay team or individual races in six events. They swept the podium in the girls 50-yard freestyle with Elizabeth Bingham (25.82) claiming first followed by Megan McLaughlin (26.75) and Stella Baldessari (27.42).
"Our team is strong," South coach Kenny Fox said prior to the meet last week. "We've really tried to focus on what we can control and what we can do better as a team. We are definitely strong as a group and we want to get stronger together."

In college sports news, the UAA volleyball team headed up to Fairbanks to take part in the Nanook Classic and came up short in all three matches it played over the two-day span. The Seawolves went the distance with Lander on Friday but fell in five sets. On Saturday, they won their first set against Stanislaus State but then proceeded to drop the next three, and later that day they were swept in three sets by Biola.
While the volleyball team wasn't having much success competing further up north in the Last Frontier, the UAA men's cross-country team did as the Seawolves swept the podium by having the top three finishers at the Nanook Forest Clash on Saturday. John Peckham earned his first career win and George Payne and Zachary Koehler completed the podium sweep. Peckham came in first by covering the 8K course in a time of 25:53, followed by Payne with a mark of 26:28, and Koehler who finished in 26:29.
The Anchorage Wolverines took the ice for the first of the 2023 NAHL regular season this past Saturday and are off to a 1-0 start after defeating the Minnesota Wilderness 5-1 at the St. Luke's Sports and Event Center in Proctor, Minnesota. The team had five different players record a goal with Finnish forward Oliver Salo scoring the first in the first minute of the game and Japanese forward Taisetsu Ushio scoring what would ultimately be the game winner because of how strong their defense was overall in their season opener.
Alaska stars shining Outside
All three of the NFL teams that feature Alaska-born players were victorious in their regular-season openers. Palmer's Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu was a healthy scratch for the Baltimore Ravens' 25-9 win over the Houston Texans and Anchorage's Tyree Wilson recorded a tackle and saw 32 total defensive snaps in the Las Vegas Raiders' 17-16 win over the Denver Broncos. Anchorage's Brandon Pili played nine total defensive snaps in the most exciting game of the day in which the Miami Dolphins beat the Los Angeles Chargers 36-34.

Fairbanks' Ruthy Hebard came off the bench and recorded a season-high 10 points in 12 minutes of action as she helped the Chicago Sky clinch a decisive 92-87 victory over the Minnesota Lynx on Friday. It marked the most points she has scored in a game since June 19, 2021, when she dropped 13 points in a 91-81 win over the Connecticut Suns. Hebard finished Friday's game 4-of-5 from the field and recorded three defensive rebounds and a blocked shot.
Anchorage's Mac Swanson made his 2023 USHL preseason debut for the Fargo Force over the weekend, and the University of North Dakota commit recorded a goal and one assist in a 4-2 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday and followed it up by scoring a goal and two assists in a 6-3 win over the Omaha Lancers on Saturday.

Rivalry week
There will be a trio of games taking place in Week 6 of the 2023 high school football season that will feature rivals facing off for the first time this year. Chugiak will host Eagle River in a Thursday night edition of the Battle of the Bridge with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Service will take on South about an hour after school gets out on Friday with a 3 p.m. kickoff to decide who will win this year's Southside Cup. The most anticipated game of rivalry week takes place at East when the Thunderbirds take on crosstown rival West in a clash of the top-ranked Division I teams in the state in what many believe could be a potential state-title game preview.

Dimond at South, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and East at South, Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The third-seeded Wolverines will host the top two teams in the Cook Inlet Conference standings this week for a pair of home matches. First will be a bout with the defending Division I state champion Lynx on Tuesday and two days later they will take on the top-seeded Thunderbirds who are currently undefeated through the first three weeks of the 2023 season.
Cross Country
Class Race 3K, Friday at Bartlett at 2:45 p.m.
Endurance runners from every high school grade classification will be competing against their peers in the same grade heading into the weekend. The 3K course race will pit freshmen against freshmen, sophomores against sophomores, juniors against juniors and seniors against seniors in both the boys and girls divisions.
