Return to state: London sweeps Santa Gertrudis Academy to punch state ticket

London knew it had a chance to have a special season with the return of nearly every player from last season’s state championship team.

The Pirates won another district title in 2023, cruised through the playoffs and once again, put themselves in position to return to the state tournament in Round Rock.

London’s hopes of remaining the best team in Region IV came to fruition on Saturday after defeating district rival Santa Gertrudis Academy 8-0 in Game 2 of the Region IV-3A final at Calallen's Steve Chapman Field.

Mason Jacob set the tone with a two-run home run in the first inning and Texas A&M commit Blayne Lyne pitched six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts to help the Pirates punch their ticket to the state tournament for the third consecutive season.

"It's pretty special," said Jacob, who homered, doubled and singled in Saturday's win. "We've set a standard that it's state or nothing now. That's what we work for every year and that's our goal."

The Pirates will try and defend their state title on Friday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock and will have a semifinal opponent once seeding is determined.
