Report: Jets have ‘favorite’ in coaching search and it’s not Brian Daboll

Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has had links to four head coaching openings thus far. While his current team is still playing, there’s a chance that Daboll could be heading out after the season if one of these clubs tab him as their next head coach.

Of these four, there’s two that aren’t a full concern just yet. The Texans and Eagles were loosely connected to Daboll via reports but we haven’t yet seen that these teams ask for permission to interview him just yet.

But we did have two that already talked to him, the Chargers and the Jets. In regard to the latter, Buffalo got a welcome update on Wednesday via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Per Rap Sheet, the Jets have a favorite for the job at this time and their name is not “Brian Daboll.” Instead it’s 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

“The plan… I would say ‘plan’ for the Jets, is to bring in potentially other candidates for second interviews. As far as I can tell, no interviews are as of yet scheduled. Which means, Robert Saleh, if he’s not the favorite for the Jets, is a favorite,” Rapoport said.

He went on to add that “everyone believes (Saleh) will get a job this year” so perhaps the Jets are feeling some pressure from other teams that want to interview Saleh so they want to make their decision sooner rather than later. That could help the Bills retain Daboll.

Currently it’s been reported via Jets Wire that Saleh has had a second interview with the Jets this week. More of those could come via the likes of Daboll, and Saleh might just be getting his crack at it first because… he can.

Daboll’s team is still playing. He’s busy and by NFL rules, he’s not allowed to talk to the Jets again until he has some free time after Buffalo’s Saturday meeting with the Ravens in the AFC Divisional round. Meanwhile. Saleh’s team didn’t make it to the playoffs. He can chat whenever.

On a related note, Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier did have a request to interview sent his way via the Texans earlier this week.
