Report: Canucks to release veteran C Spooner

The Vancouver Canucks will release center Ryan Spooner after buying out the final year of his contract, according to a report from Sportsnet.

Spooner, 27, is coming off a disappointing season in which he tallied nine points (three goals, six assists) in 52 games with the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers and Canucks. He was traded twice during the season, first in November from New York to Edmonton in exchange for Ryan Strome, and then in February from Edmonton to Vancouver for Sam Gagner.

In 325 career games, Spooner has 167 points (48 goals, 119 assists). He scored double-digit goals in three straight seasons from 2015-16 to 2017-18.
