NFL draft: Redskins draft Stanford RB Bryce Love, and Derrius Guice sends cryptic message on Twitter

The Washington Redskins selected former Stanford RB Bryce Love with the 112th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft Saturday.

Joining newly drafted QB Dwayne Haskins, Love will join a crowded backfield of RBs already in the nation’s capital.

Love’s best season came in 2017, when he reached 2,118 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns on 8.1 yards per carry. That same year, he came in second in the Heisman Trophy voting, losing out to Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield. Had Love decided to forgo his senior year and enter the 2018 draft, he likely would have been an early pick. However, the now-21-year-old opted to return for his senior campaign.

Love tore his ACL during Stanford’s season finale against Cal last year and underwent surgery on December 18, 2018. In a statement to Yahoo Sports, Love was candid about his recovery process and made clear his priorities remained to be picked up by an NFL franchise.

“I’m very grateful to Dr. Andrews and his team for making the surgery a seamless process,” Love said back in January. “Obviously, there’s no such thing as an ideal injury, but I’m on the path to recovery, and my goal remains the same — getting drafted by an NFL team and being the ultimate professional. I’ll be back better than I’ve ever been.”

While they won’t be playing on the same team come August, Love joins fellow Cardinal RB Christian McCaffrey in the league, and had nothing but positive sentiments for his former colleague at this year’s NFL combine in February.

“That’s my guy!” Love said via The Charlotte Observer. “At the end of the day, I learned so much from him when he was up at Stanford. Even watching how he’s handling it out in Charlotte — he’s a great guy, a great leader and a great mentor. I’m thankful for him.”

Guice posts cryptic message on Twitter

Love’s addition could leave other Redskins RB Derrius Guice’s future in question. The former LSU Tiger is still nursing an ACL tear he picked up during a Redskins preseason contest last year. Guice tweeted a rather cryptic message following Love’s selection, which he immediately claimed referenced someone else.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Guice’s knee is “coming along a little slower” than the Redskins expected, and Love could be ready to play this year.
