Red River's Grube wins Grand Forks girls golf meet

Aug. 22—GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks Red River junior Jaya Grube lives near the Grand Forks Country Club and has grown up playing the course.

That didn't hurt Monday at the Grand Forks Central Invitational as she took medalist honors with a 75.

Grube was one of just three golfers to break 80. She finished one shot ahead of Fargo Davies' Rose Solberg.

"I think I just know what shots I'll hit every hole and where it's okay to miss and where it's not okay to miss," Grube said. "The greens are similar all the time. I know the greens well."

Grube said another key to a first-place finish was hitting a lot of fairways and greens in regulation.

"I also made some good putts I don't always make," Grube said. "It was just steady, simple golf."

Grube's first-place finish helped Red River take the team title over Fargo Davies.

In addition to Grube, Red River's Sophie Brakke shot an 82 to finish in a tie for fourth, while Ella Speidel and Lauren Soholt each shot an 86 to finish in a tie for ninth.

"Jaya is a really solid player," Red River coach Eric Sanders said. "She knows this course well. She's confident. She opened up with a birdie on 1 and that set the tone for the day. This golf course isn't overly easy. The green can make you look silly, and she did have some three-putts but she handled it really well."

Grand Forks Central was led by an eighth-place finish from captain Madelyn Trapnell, who finished 12th at the East-West Classic earlier this season.

"She had a really great back nine," Central coach Christine Bloms said. "On 10, she drove the green and dropped a putt for birdie. She had lots of good putting."
