Let’s start Wednesday morning with a warning: Beware, hot take ahead:

What’s it going to take for Kevin Durant to (here it comes) surpass LeBron James on The List?

You know the one. MJ’s on top. LeBron’s presumed to be cemented at No. 2. If that’s so, then where does his closest contemporary rank if said contemporary leads his team to a three-peat … something LeBron wasn’t able to do with his super team?

Oh, I get it, Durant ran toward the rings, they didn’t come to him. But so did LeBron. So that’s a wash. On the flip side, LeBron dragged the Cavs to a title they had no business winning, so that’s one for him.

But what if Durant and the Warriors win three in a row, KD bolts to New York and … turns the no-good stinking Knicks into champions?

The odds of all of that happening are … not that long. The three-peat looks probable, but only because Durant is there. Without him, Golden State doesn’t win last year, maybe not this year. They’re beatable sans KD, even moreso by KD (with a little help of course).

Can KD be > LeBron? It’s not a ridiculous question.
