Previewing the Miami Hurricanes’ 2023 football schedule
Following a disappointing 5-7 season in 2022, the Hurricanes will look to put up a better record in Mario Cristobal’s second season at the helm.
Unfortunately for Miami, the 2023 schedule is not particularly easy. The ACC scrapped the Atlantic and Coastal division and moved to a 3-5-5 scheduling model. The Hurricanes have three permanent conference opponents — Boston College, Florida State and Louisville. In addition to those three ACC opponents, Miami will face Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Georgia Tech this season.
Here is a breakdown of the Hurricanes’ 2023 schedule:
Sept. 1, vs. Miami (Ohio), 7 p.m., TV: ACC Network, The Buzz: Miami faces the other Miami for the fourth time ever and the first time since 1987. The Hurricanes have beaten the RedHawks all three times, and they likely will be heavy favorites in the season opener.
Sept. 9, vs. Texas A&M, 3:30 p.m., TV: ABC, The Buzz: The Hurricanes’ first major test comes in a rematch with the Aggies. Texas A&M beat UM in a sold out Kyle Field last year, so Miami will try to get some revenge at home.
Sept. 14, vs. Bethune-Cookman, 7:30 p.m., TV: ACC Network, The Buzz: UM will have a short week to recuperate and prepare for a Thursday night game against Bethune-Cookman, but the Hurricanes routed the Wildcats last year and should have no problem against their in-state opponent.
Sept. 23, at Temple, Time: TBA, TV: TBA, The Buzz: The Hurricanes travel to Philadelphia for their first road trip of the season. Temple, an AAC program, went 3-9 last year in its first season under Stan Drayton.
Oct. 7, vs. Georgia Tech, Time: TBA, TV: TBA, The Buzz: The ACC season begins with a home game against the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech is entering its second season under Brent Pry, who took over for Geoff Collins during the 2022 season. Miami beat Georgia Tech in Atlanta last year.
Oct. 14, at North Carolina, Time: TBA, TV: TBA, The Buzz: The ACC grind picks up in mid-October as the Hurricanes go to Chapel Hill to face Heisman contender Drake Maye and the Tar Heels. North Carolina had the No. 26 offense in the nation last year and beat UM by three points last season.
Oct. 21, vs. Clemson, Time: TBA, TV: TBA, The Buzz: The gauntlet continues as the Hurricanes host perennial ACC favorite Clemson. The Tigers blew out the Hurricanes 40-10 in South Carolina last year and have won four straight against Miami (by an average margin of 37 points).
Oct. 28, vs. Virginia, Time: TBA, TV: TBA, The Buzz: Miami got the edge over Virginia on the road last year in a game where neither team scored a touchdown. Surely, the Hurricanes would like more offense in this year’s home matchup. The Cavaliers finished last year 3-7, canceling their final two games following a shooting that left three football players dead.
Nov. 4, at North Carolina State, Time: TBA, TV: TBA, The Buzz: Miami makes its second trip to North Carolina’s Research Triangle region, facing the Wolfpack in Raleigh. The Hurricanes have won four straight against N.C. State, but the last two games were decided by a combined four points.
Nov. 11, at Florida State, Time: TBA, TV: TBA, The Buzz: The Hurricanes are looking for major payback in this rivalry game. The Seminoles won in lopsided fashion in Miami Gardens last year, beating UM 45-3. FSU has major preseason hype after a 10-3 season last year.
Nov. 18, vs. Louisville, Time: TBA, TV: TBA, The Buzz: Miami hosts Louisville for the first time since 2019, but the Hurricanes and Cardinals will be seeing a lot more of each other going forward. The pair of teams are annual opponents in the ACC’s new scheduling model, and they will play for the Howard Schnellenberger Trophy each year.
Nov. 24, at Boston College, 12 p.m., TV: ABC, The Buzz: While the rest of the country is still digesting its Thanksgiving meal, the Hurricanes will face the Eagles at noon on Black Friday. Miami has a 24-6 all-time record against Boston College, but the Eagles have beaten the Hurricanes in three of their last four meetings.
