Prep Spotlight: Brawner, Vickery lead Gillespie; Carlinville, Havana also win

NOKOMIS — Mia Brawner and freshman Amari Vickery combined to score 34 points as Gillespie beat Nokomis 60-38 in a nonconference battle on Monday.

Brawner, a junior, had 10 points in each half, hit nine shots from the field and had two three-point plays. Vickery scored 12 of her 14 points in the opening quarter as the Miners (10-4) took a 22-12 lead.

Gillespie’s defense forced Nokomis (7-5) into 21 turnovers.

Grace DeWerff led Nokomis with 13 points. She connected on three 3-pointers.

CARLINVILLE 46, RAYMOND LINCOLNWOOD 19

At the Big House in Carlinville, Hannah Gibson and Kaitlyn Reels each scored 14 points in a nonconference win.

Gibson scored 10 of her points as Carlinville raced out to a 31-8 halftime lead. Reels hit twice from behind the 3-point arc.

The Cavaliers (9-3) have won four straight games.

Taryn Millburg led the Lancers (4-11) with 13 points. She made four 3s.

HAVANA 62, FARMINGTON 7

At Havana, the Ducks limited Farmington to just three field goals and Josie Hughes scored 19 points in a Prairieland Conference game.

Hughes scored eight points in the opening quarter as the Ducks went ahead 20-0. Farmington would be held scoreless again in the third quarter.

Jaylynn Sarnes added 10 points for the Ducks (6-6 overall, 1-0 Prairieland). Farmington fell to 1-11 (0-3).

MOUNT STERLING BROWN COUNTY 60, BEARDSTOWN 32

At Mount Sterling, sophomore Camila Salazar led the Tigers with 10 points in the nonconference loss.

Delma Salazar added eight for the Tigers, who fell to 8-7.

Kenzie Kassing led the Hornets (9-2) with 19 points while Izzy Duarte netted 15.
