Prep Sports: Academy volleyball wins at Hillsdale; Colts soccer earns senior night win

HILLSDALE — It was a rivalry week and senior night for several Hillsdale County prep sports teams. Hillsdale Academy boys soccer christened in the new stadium at Hayden Park with a win and followed it up with a senior night victory.

Hillsdale soccer got a major win over Blissfield but fell to Ida in their league closer. Cross country runners competed in their second league jamborees of the season to various results. Over in Hillsdale, the Hornet varsity volleyball team hosted Hillsdale Academy for the biggest rivalry matchup of the week.

Here are the scores and results from each key event that happened before the weekend of Oct. 6 in Hillsdale County.

Hillsdale volleyball falls in crosstown showdown to the Academy

The D4 No. 5 Hillsdale Academy Colts volleyball team won a four-set thriller at Hillsdale High School. The rivalry matchup saw the Academy win set one in a 25-19 final. The Hornets came back and took set two in a 25-22 final. The Colts won the final two sets in finals of 25-12 and 25-14.

The Colts had big nights from two of their starters. Senior Ava King had 17 kills and 14 digs to lead the Colts in those categories. Clara Heath led the Colts with a total of 27 assists. Ella O' Grady led the Colts with seven aces. Liz Cregar had nine kills. Heath also added seven kills and nine digs. Angela Alavarez and Week 6 athlete of the week nominee Liz Andaloro had seven digs each.

The Colts improved to 15-5-1 on the season.

Earlier in the week, the Colts defeated the Litchfield Terriers in three set finals of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-9. The Colts were led by Clara Heath's 30 assists and five aces. Natalie Spielman contributed 10 kills. The Colts won the matchup at the net despite the Terriers serving up a total of 11 total blocks that night.

Hillsdale falls to 3-7-1 on the season. The Hornets lost a league matchup in three sets on Tuesday. They face Clinton on Oct. 10 at home. The Colts head to Lenawee Christian for a quad meet on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Volleyball Quick Hits

Jonesville beats Vandercook Lake but falls to Napoleon

Coach Dan Snook and the Comets split their Week 7 matches. They defeated Vandercook Lake in three sets. The final scores were 25-16, 25-7 and 25-10. They lost to Napoleon in four sets on Thursday night.

Against Vandercook Lake, Gracen Hager had 13 kills to lead the Comets. Lyra Nichols had 26 assists. Alexis Ewing had 11 digs. Natalynn Beach had three blocks. Against Napoleon, Ewing had 29 digs to lead the team. Beach and Hager each had 10 kills. Lyra Nichols had 20 assists. Mackenzie Plum had two aces and 18 digs. Beach had four blocks.

Reading wins two matches against Maple Valley and Morenci

The Ranger volleyball team and coach Melissa Warfield won two matches in three sets to improve to 7-4-1 overall. They beat Maple Valley in final scores of 25-7, 25-13 and 25-9. They beat Morenci in scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-16.

Camden-Frontier defeats Waldron

Camden-Frontier volleyball and coach Dawn Follis won in three sets against Waldron on Tuesday night. The final scores were 25-16, 27-25 and 25-19.

Litchfield takes down Will Carleton Academy

The Terriers took down WCA in a five-set thriller on Thursday night. Will Carleton won set one 25-13 and set three 25-20. The Terriers won their sets by final scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 15-10.

Soccer Quick Hits

Hillsdale Academy defeats Michigan Center 8-0 on senior night

It was a blowout victory for the Colts on their senior night. Coach Neal Brady and the Colts defeated Michigan Center 8-0 for their third straight win. They also defeated Grass Lake earlier in the week by a final score of 4-3.

Soccer: Hillsdale and Academy boys soccer teams earn home wins in important league matches

Hillsdale falls to Ida in league finale

Coach Garrett Collier and the Hornet boys soccer team looked to end their league schedule with a second-straight LCAA win. They would ultimately fall to Ida in a 4-0 final on Thursday night. Earlier in the week, they bested Blissfield in a high-scoring matchup 7-5.

County Cup Reminder

Hillsdale Academy visits the Field of Dreams this year for the annual County Cup showdown between the Hornets of Hillsdale and the Colts of the Academy. The Academy has bested Hillsdale in the past two County Cups. The game will be played on Monday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m.

Cross-Country Jamboree Results

SCAA

Hillsdale Academy's boys cross country team won its second LCAA jamboree of the season. Academy runners Grayson Rorick, Thomas Holm, Henry Lindley, James Rahe and Karol Schlueter swept the top five results. Rorick won the race with a 17:22 final time.

Darran Drake took 11th for Camden-Frontier with a time of 20:31. Ryan Anderson took 16th for Waldron with a time of 20:56. Pittsford runner Nick Jagielski took 32nd with a time of 23:13.

The Academy girls team defeated Pittsford at the same jamboree. Senior Wildcat Brooke Smith won the jamboree with a time of 21:21. Teammates Ava Mallar and Riley McCumber took third and fourth respectively. Colts runners Ella Walton, Allie Miller and Grace Brownlee finished 5th, 6th and 7th respectively.

Camden-Frontier Athlete of the Week winner Taylor Lautermilch took 11th with a time of 24:49. Waldron runner Dakota Hoffman took 29th with a time of 29:07.

Cascades

Jonesville defeated Addison twice in a dual meet. Senior Gavin VanKampen led the boys team with a first-place finish and a time of 17:17. Caleb Blonde, Nicholas Fowler, David Fowler, Collin Fucile, Zachery Childress and Jacob Norman all placed in the top 7. Karly Page led the girls team with a second-place finish and a time of 23:44.

LCAA

The Hornets competed in their second league jamboree of the season. Hillsdale junior Chloe Stalhood led the girls team with a seventh-place finish and a time of 22:06. Nolan Grant took second for the Hornet boys team with a time of 16:50. Logan Youngman also had a top five finish, taking fourth with a time of 17:00.

Big 8

Reading cross country competed at Maple Valley in their league jamboree. The boys team was led by Athlete of the Week winner Kutter VanAken with a ninth-place finish and a time of 19:30. Sophomore Brayden Wright took 16th with a time of 20:16. For the Ranger girls team, junior Sophia Falater took 13th with a time of 24:30. Senior Paige Santi took 21st with a time of 26:10.
