Prep roundup for Monday, Sept. 25

Sep. 25—Maconaquah's Daisy Williams shot a 3-over 75 to take the second individual advancing spot from the Lafayette Jeff Regional on Saturday and advance to the IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals.

Williams shot 37 on the front nine at Battle Ground G.C. and 38 on the back nine to place sixth overall in a field of 15 teams and 15 individuals at the regional. She avoided big numbers, hitting two birdies and five bogeys. The Mac junior is headed to the state meet for the first time. The top three teams and top three individuals not on an advancing team advanced to the state meet, which runs Friday and Saturday at Prairie View G.C. in Carmel.

"Daisy played solid golf by hitting straight tee shots that het her hit aggressive second shots into the large Battle Ground greens," Mac coach Tait Wagner said. "Errant tee shots were followed by smart approach shots that left her the best opportunity to get up and down for par.

"Daisy was extremely focused and [didn't] allow bad breaks or distractions affect her."

Carmel took first with a 307, followed by Westfield (309) and Zionsville (313). The gap to fourth place was 27 strokes. Maconaquah was seventh with a score of 369, Western and Eastern both shot 429 with the Panthers taking 14th and the Comets 15th based on a fifth-player score tiebreaker.

Following Williams, Miranda Stoll shot 91 for the Braves, Aubrey Stoll carded 97, and Haley Washburn shot 106.

Elizabeth Mercer shot 78 to lead Western and tied for 10th. The Panther senior, who was bidding for a fourth trip to state, was one shot behind the third and final individual qualifying spot. Also for the Panthers, Grace Williams shot 105, Analise Dixon shot 122, and Gracie Burns 124.

Cora Bartrum led Eastern with a 96, followed by Jenna Hendricks (106), Alaina Schemehorn (113) and Teagan Bedwell (114).

Four locals were playing as individuals at Battle Ground. Peru's Piercey Dyer shot 79 and tied for 12th. Northwestern's Berkley Wray shot 93, Kokomo's Brileigh Quillen-Popejoy shot 107, and Carroll's Laney Johnson shot 109.

LAPEL REGIONAL

Tipton's Kennedy Lancaster shot a superb 75 at the regional at Edgewood G.C. and finished fifth overall, but finished one shot off the last qualifying spot for the state tournament.

Of the four players ahead of her, just one was on an advancing team and the other three took the three qualifying spots for state with the last spot going to Union County's Peity Gillman, who shot 74.

BOYS TENNIS

KOKOMO 4, ROSSVILLE 1

The Kats improved to 16-5 with a win in their regular-season finale at Rossville.

Kokomo swept the doubles points with Chad Washburn and Micah Taflinger winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and William Nelson and Canaan Horner winning 6-2, 6-2. Also for the Kats, Caleb Taflinger won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Mitch McClelland won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

"We had three starters, [including] two senior captains, out for a big school debate competition and were able to use our depth to get a good win," Kokomo coach Travis Taflinger said. "Caleb, Mitch and No. 1 doubles all played great. William Nelson and Canaan Horner stepped in at 2 doubles and played really well together.

"I'm thankful we have 10 guys that can play at the varsity level," he added.

NW 3, MARION 2

Northwestern swept the doubles, dropping just two games in tandem play, to lead the Tigers to victory and an 11-4 record.

At No. 1 doubles, Hayden Cook and Conner Gaier won 6-0, 6-1, and at No. 2, Eythen Fogg and Adam Lesko won 6-0, 6-1. No. 3 singles player Landen Begley won 6-1, 6-4.

"This was a good win for us," NW co-coach Matt Woods said. "We were able to show some of the depth we have. Marion is anchored by three strong singles players. We knew we had to get one of those. Landen played a really smart match. He covers court really well and is tough to beat when he is mentally engaged. Doubles dominated from start to finish. We just have to be careful not to let our feet get lazy when we see less pace."

EASTERN INVITE

Eastern took second in the inaugural Eastern Invite, beating Elwood 3-2, then falling 3-2 to Mississinewa in the final.

Against Elwood, Comet No. 2 singles player Colton Lindsay, the No. 1 doubles team of Sam Torivo and Parker Rogers, and the No. 2 team of Jase Cloum and J.T. Atherton all picked up wins.

In the final, Lindsay won 6-0, 6-0, and the No. 2 tandem of Cloum and Atherton won 7-5, 6-3.

BOYS SOCCER

TAYLOR 6, EASTERN 0

Ryan Fleek scored a hat trick for the Titans, Carlos Hinojosa had two goals and Eli O'Neal scored. Collier Thompson and Landon Wiley had assists. Angelo Anders had 10 saves.

Taylor (3-9) led 5-0 at the half in rolling to its third win in a row.

"Super proud of my guys. I told my guys at halftime that was the best 40 minutes we'd played, and after the game the best 80 minutes we'd played," Taylor coach Kirk Wiley said.

"I'd venture we had 80-85 percent possession over the game. We did a phenomenal job connecting white shirt to white shirt. Our passes were on point, they were the right speed. We didn't have a lot of errant passes and when we had our opportunities on net, we obviously capitalized on a lot of them."

Eastern (3-9) credited Lincoln Mentis with 11 saves, Owen Seagrave with nine and Caleb Katsimpalis with one.

"We didn't match Taylor's intensity in the first half," Eastern coach Todd Stout said. "They were winning all the 50-50 balls and had us on our heels. Taylor made a lot of nice plays on defense at and around the goal, that stopped the chances we had throughout the game."

CARROLL 2, RENSSELAER 1

The Class A No. 9 Cougars got goals from Corbin Turner and Joan Pujadas Pallicer to top the Bombers. Joshua Radcliff had an assist. Cohen Miller had two saves for Carroll (10-3).

MAC WINS INVITE

Maconaquah beat Washington Township and Rochester to win Winamac's invitational.

The Braves beat Washington Township 3-0 in the semifinal round. Ethan Zeiser and Alex Hicks scored goals in the opening five minutes to stake the Braves to a 2-0 lead. Isaac Lorenz and Bennett Isenburg assisted on the goals. The final goal came in the final minute of the match when Isenburg converted a penalty kick.

Mac beat Rochester 6-0 in the final. Lorenz, Joseth Manueles, Joel Loshnowsky, Kyler Hanson, Garrett McManus and Kaden Hanson scored a goal apiece. Isenburg and Manueles had an assist each. Defensively, the Braves held the Zebras to one shot on goal.

The Braves (12-2) takes on Manchester today in a clash for the Three Rivers Conference lead.

GIRLS SOCCER

KOKOMO 6, MUNCIE 0

Ellen Callane scored a hat trick to lead Kokomo past Muncie Central in North Central Conference play. Iris Brehm added a brace and Layla Brehm also scored.

W. LAFAYETTE 2, NW 0

West Lafayette beat Northwestern in the Hoosier Conference Tournament's championship at Northwestern.

The Tigers dropped to 12-2-1, with both losses coming to the Red Devils.

EASTERN 1, WABASH 1

Brooklynn Brooks scored off a Grace VanBibber assist for the Comets (5-5-2). Ruby Sheets was credited with 19 saves.

BOYS XC

CULVER AC. INVITE

Maconaquah participated in the closed division of the Culver Academies Invitational, taking sixth out of 35 complete teams. Oak Hill was the team champion with a score of 64, well ahead of Culver Academies in second (123). Maconaquah's score was 257. Northwestern was 14th (360), Carroll 17th (446), Tipton 22nd (614), Peru 26th (745), and Eastern 32nd (870).

Daylen Schrock led Mac by taking 14th in 17:10, followed by Isaiah Wittenberg (20th, 17:39), Kaden Miller (28th, 17:53), Isaiah Moore (79th, 18:46) and Jeffrey Wilson (135th, 19:49). Schrock, Wittenberg and Miller medaled as part of the top 30.

Jacob Bumgardner led Northwestern in 29th (17:54).

"It wasn't a PR kind of day, but we had a good day," NW coach Josh Perry said. "Even though times weren't what we wanted, I was happy with everyone's races. Our paces are getting more consistent and that's great to see rolling into championship season. Jacob Bumgardner led for us with another good race. He is having a great season."

Regan Wolf led Carroll in 34th (17:56). Jaxsen Muncie led Tipton in 53rd (18:21). Leland Brown led Peru in 118th (19:36).

In Eastern's portion of the closed team race, Jakob Bertoline led the Comets (150th, 20:13), followed by Kamp Miller (159th, 20:20), Amos Greene (200th, 21:19), Reagan Long (238th, 22:38) and Parker Smith-McCombs (272nd, 24:17).

Eastern's Obi Greene participated in the open division race as an individual, taking 46th in 17:06.

Eastern coach Ben Cox said the Comets' emphasis "was about gaining more experience in a larger field of runners. Every one responded pretty well, and I'm pretty happy with how the guys raced. Some progress can't be measured only by a race time, and they did improve."

Kokomo competed in the open division race with the Kats taking 23rd (596) out of 25 complete teams. Cooper Cage led the Kats in 55th (17:14). State superpower Carmel won the open race with a score of 51.

GIRLS XC

CULVER AC. INVITE

Maconaquah won the closed division of the Culver Academies Invitational, scoring 121 points to take first out of 28 complete teams. Western was second with a score of 149. Northwestern was 10th (301), Cass 14th (342), Carroll 15th (374), and Eastern 28th (715).

Abby Jordan led Maconaquah, taking sixth in 19:48, followed by Zoie Laber (15th, 20:51), Lucy Loshnowsky (20th, 21:04), Chloe Jordan (24th, 21:11), and Kaytlin Moeller (65th, 22:45). Both Jordans, Laber and Loshnowsky each medaled after scoring a spot in the top 30.

Kendall DePoy led Western in 10th (20:40).

Hannah Moore took second to lead Northwestern (18:38) and Courtney Adams was fifth (19:45).

"That was one of the biggest races I have ever seen," Perry said. "There were about 250 runners and that led to big crowds. We got lost in the shuffle early on and didn't get to run in open space for the first mile. That set us back but the girls fought back after a rough start."

Aftin Griffin was third to lead Cass (19:18). Jillian Salt led Carroll in 52nd (22:24). Tipton was incomplete and Bre Muncie led the Blue Devils in 66th (22:56.7).

Alivia Kinney led Eastern (144th, 25:12), followed by Destiny Hess (173rd, 26:14), Rhayelin Scott (175th, 26:18), Addie Conner (194th, 27:04), and Malia Shellnut (209th, 28:09).

Kokomo competed in the open division race, taking 22nd of 22 complete teams. Gretchen Riggle led Kokomo in 138th (25:37). State superpower Carmel won the open division with a score of 52, on a tiebreaker to break a deadlock with Fort Wayne Concordia.
