Prep roundup: Benzie 4-0 while doing the splits; TC Central all alone in BNC hockey lead
Jan. 24—TRAVERSE CITY — Benzie Central swept a tri match with a split squad Wednesday.
The Huskies came out on top 57-22 against Traverse City West and 45-36 against Traverse City St. Francis, while winning two duals elsewhere in northern Michigan as well.
TC West prevailed in a 53-29 decision against St. Francis.
Winning two matches for Benzie Central were Dayne Gillison, Benjamin DeRidder, Jacob Gillison, Owen Cruden, Tyrone Brouillet, and Ryan Kincaid. Single victories came from Cage Edinfield, Mason, Childs, Cambrie Lawrence, Jesse Mummey, Conner Wenkel and Danny Wallington,
St. Francis started out with a Tyler Sheeran pin at 126 pounds, but Benzie went in the lead after a Lawrence forfeit win and Gillison technical fall at 138.
The Gladiators came back with pins by Brady Tharp and Matthew Rialson before Brouillet's 9-0 decision for the Huskies. Beau Belanger, Cam Sellers and Ben Eckler won by fall, with Eckler's taking only eight seconds. A Kincaid pin in 1:11 at 285 points pulled Benzie within 36-27, and the Huskies received three forfeit wins to close out the dual victory.
Double winners for West included Treyson Nyland (106), Caleb Thomas (132) and Brady Vaughan (215). Finn O'Brien, Matthew Quigley, Alex Reynolds, Jefferson Gay, Nick Pawlowicz and Bode Tokie notched single victories.
TCSF's winners against West were Tharp (second-period fall), Rialson (second-period fall), Belanger (pin in 1:27), Sellers (55-second pin) and Sheeran (16-1 decision).
Benzie wrestled with a split squad, sending some of its team to a tri match in Lake City, where the Huskies knocked off Manton 65-17 and Lake City 48-33.
Winning two matches for Benzie in those duals were Lane Sanchez, Mike Pfeiffer, Aiden Erfourth, Keenan Ryan, Scotty Stover, Joe Morse, Lawson Simmons and Irvin Meachum. Ava Iverson, Braiden Goff, Richard Farrell, Dalton Geetings and Jason Peltier each posted one victory.

Traverse City Central put itself all alone atop the Big North Conference with a 3-0 road shutout of Alpena.
The Trojans and Wildcats came into the game with identical league marks. Central has to wait to potentially clinch the BNC title until its last three league games against Gaylord, Petoskey and TC West over an eight-day span in mid-February.
Zander Lorincz scored two goals and Cole Herzberg one. Assists went to Ben Burley (two), Blake Weaver and Collin Benedict.
Kiel Knapp stopped all 26 shots he faced in net.
