Prep Bowling: New Boston Huron, Milan capture Regional titles

New Boston Huron and Milan battled each other all season in Huron League bowling.

They went to different divisions for the start of the state tournament Friday and all four teams earned trips to the state finals.

Milan won both the boys and girls competition in the Division 3 Regional at Flat Rock Lanes. Huron’s boys were first and the girls second in the Division 2 Regional at Oak Lanes in Westland.

Individual competition in all divisions will be held Saturday.

DIVISION 3

FLAT ROCK – Both Milan teams were dominant.

The boys shot 3,533 to easily outdistance runner-up Blissfield with 3,326.

The girls piled up a score of 3,145 to far surpass second-place Adrian Madison with 2,541.

Dundee’s girls missed a trip to state by 2 pins, shooting 2,539. Flat Rock was fourth with 2,461 and Jefferson placed seventh with 2,109.

On the boys side, Jefferson (2,829) was ninth, Flat Rock (2,828) 10th and Dundee (2531) 11th.

DIVISION 2

WESTLAND – Huron’s boys were first with a score of 3,364 to 3,156 for second-place Airport.

“I was a little worried to today,” Huron coach Larry Collins said. “My wife calls me a worrywart, but we were not on in practice Wednesday and Thursday’s practice was not good.”

The Chiefs apparently were saving their best for the compettion.

“We shot a 244 in Game 2 and 244 again in Game 8,” Collins said. “That gave us about a 130-pin lead over everyone else. We just increased on that.”

It’s the second straight Regional crown for Huron’s boys.

The girls shot 2,746 which was second only to the 2,758 posted by Dearborn Divine Child.

Airport just missed a state trip by finishing third with 2,474.

DIVISION 1

TAYLOR – The Gibraltar Carlson and Monroe boys just missed qualifying for state in third and fourth place, respectively.

Belleville (3,565) and Taylor (3,340) got the two qualifying spots. Carlson finished at 3,320 and Monroe 3,247. Bedford placed fifth with 3,151.

Carlson was the top Monroe County Region finisher in the girls standings. The Marauders placed seventh with 2,480.

Monroe was 10th with 2,321 and Bedford 11th with 2,321.

Lincoln Park (2,751) and Belleville (2,711) qualified for state.

DIVISION 4

TECUMSEH – The St. Mary Catholic girls took third – one spot away from a trip to the state finals – with a score of 2,296.

Allen Park Cabrini (2,785) and Taylor Trillium (2,761) were the state-qualifying teams.

SMCC was sixth with 2,585 and Summerfield eighth with 2,126 in the boys competition. Britton Deerfield took first with 3,089 and Riverview Gabriel Richard second with 3,018.
