Garfield swept the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Grey Tier track and field championships Tuesday, topping runner-up Memorial 131-97.50 on the boys side and runner-up Crestview 167.50-133 on the girls side.

The throws were pivotal to the G-Men's success, as usual. They swept the throws titles on the boys side with senior Christian Gallagher winning the discus (134-0) and sophomore Richie Shackelford capturing the shot (46-4). Garfield's female throwers also racked up plenty of points with senior Lille Shackelford winning the shot (35-¼) and sophomore Elise Edwards and freshman Hannah Timmons finishing two-three in the discus.

The G-Men's distance runners also impressed.

Sophomore Derek Blunk earned runner-up honors in the 1,600 meters, and the Garfield boys also captured championships in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays.

On the girls side, G-Men sophomores Kathlene McMayon and Olivia Rowe finished second and third, respectively, in the 800 and 1,600, while Garfield freshman Eva VonBergen and senior Kourtney Brahler added another two-three finish in the 3,200. The G-Men girls also won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Garfield also got a big performance from junior Hannah Kernig, who won the long jump (14-9) and the 100 hurdles (17.84) and earned runner-up honors in the high jump (4-10).
