Plenty of South Bend-area athletes shined at the Goshen Relays Saturday. Here's who they were

GOSHEN — When we last visited Lincoln Hulsey, the LaVille pole vaulter was finishing his junior season by finishing third at the IHSAA state track finals.

That was about a year ago, and in the time that’s passed, not much changed, except that he’s only gotten better.

Hulsey cleared 15 feet, 6 inches in a meet at Knox last Thursday, making him Indiana’s best vaulter thus far this season.  And Saturday, despite bitterly cold, gusting winds at Goshen’s Foreman Field, there was Hulsey, making an oh-so-close effort at a meet record during the 81st annual Goshen Relays.

“Oh man, I had it,” exclaimed Hulsey, now a senior, who just nicked off a bar set at 15-4 in an attempt to break the Class B record.

“That’s OK, with the weather, I came here just wanting to get the win.”

With frigid temperatures forcing some teams to pack up and leave in the middle of the meet, and others not show up at all, LaVille’s field event performers seemed to be some of only a few athletes not bothered by the conditions.

In the discus, for instance, Lancer senior Michael Good uncorked a throw of 168 feet, 7 inches. He missed the Class B meet record by about three feet, and his mark went over 20 feet farther than any other thrower in the meet, whether Class A (large schools) or Class B (small schools).

“You just don’t think about it,” said Good, who broke LaVille’s school record with a 171-foot toss earlier this season. “One I got in (the discus ring) I just kind of tuned it out.”

In the boys high jump, LaVille’s Lance Edison was second. And in the girls high jump, LaVille’s Brooke Edison finished first by clearing 5 feet — also better than the Class A result.

A new era for the annual Goshen Relays

Yes, girls high jump. For the first time, girls were added to this traditional fixture on Indiana’s track circuit.

Fort Wayne Northrop won the girls Class A title, while Hanover Central took Class B.

Elkhart’s boys edged NorthWood, 105-82, to win the Class A trophy. Several Elkhart distance runners attended a meet in Carmel on Friday night, then rushed back to compete at Goshen.

“Every meet’s a learning experience, and all the kids who competed today learned something,” said Elkhart coach Adam Homo, who pointed out his athletes were greeted by snowflakes when they arrived Saturday morning. “We’re trying to get it so we have the best possible lineup we can have at the conference and sectional meets.”

Elkhart scored big wins in the 4 x 800 and distance medley relays, to go along with Nathan Munson’s victory in the 100-meter dash, Nicholas Edwards’ win in the long jump, and Trinton Harris’s first place in the high jump.

In Class B, Fairfield nipped LaVille by seven points, 80-73, for the boys team title.

Good performances depended a lot on attitude.  Consider Saint Joseph pole vaulter, Brady Farrell, who won Class A by clearing 13-0. Only four Class A vaulters were even able to negotiate opening height.

“You just try to keep your hands warm,” Farrell said. “I came in and told myself to win and then shut it down, but I was determined to win.”

Bremen’s sprinters put on a show in girls Class B, winning titles in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays.  The Lions clocked a solid 51.60 in the 4 x 100, despite a gusting homestretch.

“In warm weather, we’ll do really well,” quipped anchor leg Kila Foster.

Saint Joseph’s Richard Halliburton nears the finish line during the 4x200-meter relay event of the Goshen Relays Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Goshen High School.

Trinity’s Audrey Lee, a freshman still learning how to race, outkicked Bremen’s Hallie Klockow in a dandy 1600-meter Class B finish, winning by 24-100ths of a second.

“The plan was just to stay with the leaders. I haven’t ran too many 1600’s,” said Lee. “I don’t really know the competition, so it was fun to win like that.”
