Make your pick: Who should be Athlete of the Week for period ending Feb. 17

Among the nominees for Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 17 were athletes who played key roles for their teams in championship performances.

Voting to pick a winner among the five will be open until the end of the day Wednesday, with nominees from the coverage areas of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elmira Star-Gazette, Ithaca Journal and Corning Leader.

Nominees are based primarily on results reported to bgmsports@gannett.com or events covered by sports reporters from the publications.

A winner will be announced Friday.

This week's nominees:

Makana "Cha" Gardner, Newark Valley girls basketball: Gardner added another big moment to her record-breaking career, scoring 30 points as Newark Valley pulled away for its fourth consecutive Interscholastic Athletic Conference Large School title, 55-35, over Whitney Point.

Zubayr Griffin, Johnson City boys basketball: After scoring 23 points in a 62-59 victory over Oneonta in the semifinals of the Southern Tier Athletic Conference tournament, Griffin came back with 37 points to lead the Wildcats to a 66-60 win over Seton Catholic Central in the title game.

Maddie Ribble, Horseheads girls basketball: The freshman came up big in the biggest game of the season to this point, scoring 14 points to help Horseheads repeat as STAC champion with a 44-43 come-from-behind win over Chenango Forks. She made three 3-pointers, one shy of her total for the season entering the game.

Amir Sadykov, Chenango Valley boys swimming: Sadykov was a quadruple-winner Saturday at the Section 4 Class B boys swimming & diving championships. He won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.04 seconds, the 100 backstroke in 52.45 and helped CV win the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. All four times were well below the state qualifying standard.

Kaden TenEyck, Horseheads boys swimming: TenEyck contributed four wins to Horseheads' team title at the Section 4 Class A championship meet. Both of his individual victories came with times below the state standard. He captured the 50-yard freestyle in 22.02 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 48.49. TenEyck also led off both winning freestyle relays.
