PGA Championship 2024 at Valhalla Golf Club: Live updates from second round in Louisville

History was made to start the PGA Championship on Thursday.

Xander Schauffele set a Valhalla Golf Club record by shooting a first-round 62. The 24-year-old record of 63 was previously held by José María Olazábal, posted during the third round of the 2000 PGA Championship. Schauffele will look to remain atop the leaderboard Friday, when he is scheduled to tee off at 2:38 p.m.

Day 2 of the PGA Championship officially gets started at 8:35 a.m. Friday, after a delay of more than an hour.

While Schauffele highlighted the first day at Valhalla, Tiger Woods struggled and finished outside the top 50. He shot 1-over-par 72 and bogeyed his last two holes. The four-time PGA Championship winner will look to have a better showing Friday, when he is scheduled to tee off at 2:49 p.m.

Courier Journal reporters Ryan Black and C.L. Brown — along with CJ photographers Matt Stone and Clare Grant — are at Valhalla and will provide coverage throughout Friday's second round.

K.H. Lee withdraws

K.H. Lee withdrew from the field Friday night, according to tournament organizers. Per Alex Myers of Golf Digest, he withdrew due to an illness.

The 32-year-old from South Korean leaves Valhalla in a tie for 123rd at 5 over.

Xander Schauffele wraps up his second round on top again

After 18 holes, Xander Schauffele led by three shots. After 36 holes, he's ahead by one stroke. For now.

Schauffele carded a 3-under 68 in the second round to move to 12 under for the championship, up by one shot on Collin Morikawa. Sahith Theegala is still on the course and could match, or pass, Schauffele, however. Theegala is 10 under with four holes to play.

Xander Schauffele holds narrow advantage

Two thirds of the way through his second round, Xander Schauffele has a one-shot lead over Collin Morikawa. Schauffele is 3 under on his round after 12 holes, improving to 12 under for the tournament. Morikawa, who teed off in the morning and carded a 6-under 65, is at 11 under.

A tie at the top

Collin Morikawa and first-round leader Xander Schauffele are knotted at 11 under in the middle of Day 2 at the PGA Championship. Schauffele is 2 under through eight holes.

Scottie Scheffler's strong finish to the second round

With six birdies, Scottie Scheffler carded 5-under 66 on the day. Scheffler's lone bogey came at his second hole of the day.

Collin Morikawa ends round atop the leaderboard

Despite bogeying his final hole, the par-4 ninth, Collin Morikawa went into the clubhouse with the PGA Championship lead at 11 under par. He carded a 6-under 65 during Friday's second round; the bogey at the last was his only dropped shot of the day, snapping a run of five straight birdies on Holes 4 through 8.

Morikawa is one shot ahead of the first-round leader, Xander Schauffele, who is 1 under on the day and 10 under for the championship.

Collin Morikawa takes the lead

Collin Morikawa, the 2020 PGA Championship winner, is the first player to reach double-digit under par this week. Morikawa has now birdied his last three holes and was at 10 under.

Morikawa was at 5 under on his round through 15 holes, with five birdies and no bogeys.

Collin Morikawa joins duo at the top of leaderboard

There's now a three-way tie for the lead at the PGA Championship. Collin Morikawa, with two major championships to his name, used back-to-back birdies on Holes 4 and 5 (the 13th and 14th holes of his round after starting at No. 10) to vault into a tie for first — alongside Mark Hubbard and Xander Schauffele — at 9 under.

Morikawa is 4 under on his round through 14 holes, with four birdies and no bogeys.

Mark Hubbard moves into tie for lead; Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler stalking close behind

Xander Schauffele finally has company at the top of the leaderboard.

Mark Hubbard capped his opening nine with a birdie on the 18th to tie for the lead at 9 under par. Hubbard is 3 under on his round after shooting a bogey-free 33 on the back nine.

Also 3 under on the day is two-time major winner Collin Morikawa, who is alone in third at 8 under.

Scottie Scheffler finishes front nine 2 under par

After a more-dramatic-than-expected morning, Scottie Scheffler posted a birdie on the 18th, his ninth hole of the second round, to make the turn at 2 under par after shooting 34 on Valhalla's back nine. He's now 6 under for the tournament and in a tie for seventh.

Who's making moves Friday morning during second round of PGA Championship?

No player has been able to match Xander Schauffele at 9 under just yet. But little-known Mark Hubbard is within one stroke. Hubbard, who's never won on the PGA Tour, is 2 under through six holes, improving to 8 under for the tournament.

The low round on the course, as of 12:30 p.m., is 3 under, with five golfers boasting that figure: Jason Day, Harris English, Brian Harman, Joaquin Niemann and Braden Shattuck, who's one of 20 club professionals in the field. English is in the best spot of that quintet, rising to 6 under and tied for sixth on the overall leaderboard.

Min Woo Lee off to a hot start

Min Woo Lee shot a 72 in the first round of the PGA Championship on Thursday. In the second round, he made three birdies in his first seven holes and was at 3 under par.

Sebastian Söderberg notches ace

The 33-year-old Sebastian Söderberg makes the first hole-in-one of the PGA Championship from 169 yards. This was the first hole-in-one at Valhalla since the 1996 PGA, as no aces were recorded in the last two PGAs at the course (2000 and 2014, respectively).

Former PGA champion John Daly withdraws

Professional golfer John Daly smoked during putting practice at the 2024 PGA Championship practice Tuesday at Valhalla Golf Course in Louisville, Ky. May 14, 2024.
Professional golfer John Daly smoked during putting practice at the 2024 PGA Championship practice Tuesday at Valhalla Golf Course in Louisville, Ky. May 14, 2024.

John Daly, the long-hitting legend and 1991 PGA Championship winner, withdrew from this year's event Friday morning, according to tournament organizers. Per the PGA, Daly withdrew because of a thumb injury.

He was slated to begin his second round off the 10th tee at 3:17 p.m., playing alongside Lee Hodges and Robert MacIntyre. Daly would have needed a spectacular second round to make the weekend after shooting an 11-over 82 in Thursday's opening round, putting him more than 10 shots off the projected cut line entering Friday.

Daly won the 1991 PGA at Crooked Stick as the ninth alternate in that year's field. His second major title came at the 1995 Open Championship, held that year at St. Andrews. Before moving to the Champions Tour, where he primarily plays these days, Daly won five tournaments (including his two majors) during his time on the PGA Tour.
