Penn State punter Jordan Stout earns Big Ten player of the week honor

Saturday’s season opener was a bit of a mixed bag of results for punter and part-time kicker Jordan Stout. In Penn State’s 16-10 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers, Stout missed an extra point attempt and missed a short field goal attempt to leave four points on the field for Penn State, giving Wisconsin multiple opportunities to grab a win in the closing moments. Stout did connect on a game-tying 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, which should not be forgotten. Of course, the Penn State defense came to the rescue and all was well in the end.

Despite some concerns with place kicking, Stout was bombing away on his regular punting duties, and the Big Ten honored him for his performance.

The Big Ten released its Week 1 player of the week honors, including Stout being named Special Teams Player of the Week. Stout averaged 53.9 yards over seven punts for Penn State. That average is the second-highest single-game punting average in Penn State history (Ralph Giacomarro averaged 54.75 yards per punt in a 1981 game against Syracuse).

A total of five punts sailed over 50 yards off the leg of stout, and it was needed. For a while, Penn State was engaged in a field position battle with the Badgers. On a day it took a while for the offense to get going, Stout helped turn the field position around.
