Patriots stand pat on day-one of the NFL Draft

After months of speculation about the fates of Jimmy Garrapolo and Malcolm Butler, the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft came-and-went and both remained on the Patriots roster, ending said-speculation that the Browns would consider moving one of their two first round picks for Garrapolo. Likewise, it seems to put an end to the Butler-to-Saints rumors that picked up several weeks ago.

The Browns had really been the only team connected to Garrapolo from the get-go and it always started with the 1st and 12th overall pick. The Browns selected Myles Garret with the first overall pick and traded the 12th overall pick to Houston and selected defensive back Jabrill Peppers out of Michigan with the 25th pick of the first round, almost certainly guaranteeing Garrapolo remains on the Patriots roster through the 2017 season.

After the Saints selected cornerback Marshon Lattimore with the 11th overall pick, that brought what little momentum was left of a trade of Butler from the Patriots to the Saints to a screeching halt. We have seen the interest in Butler from the Saints diminish over the last couple weeks so this isn’t that surprising, however Butler’s future with the team still remains a mystery.

The Patriots should keep Butler. They hold all the cards in this situation because Butler can only hurt himself by playing poorly and/or missing time so it is in his best interest to go out there and showcase his talent next year. However, the Richard Sherman rumors continue to pop up and it was speculated recently that Sherman wants to be traded to the Patriots.

Would the Patriots swing a deal for Sherman?

With the Patriots lack of high draft picks in this years draft, it only makes sense that any trade for Sherman would start with Butler. For the Patriots, this trade could be enticing to the Patriots despite the contract for Richard Sherman. This would be a swap of two, for lack of a better phrase, disgruntled players that could be win-win for both teams. Presumably if the trade were to go through, the Seahawks would sign Butler to a long-term deal and the Patriots would have Sherman for at least two seasons, as oppose to Butler for just one-more year.

For now, one of the largest hurdles in keeping Garrapolo and Butler on the Patriots in 2017 has passed with the Browns and Saints holding on to their first-round selections. Garrapolo seems destined to be the back-up to Tom Brady once again and Butler looks primed to create a devastating duo on the corners with newly-signed Stephon Gilmore… at least for one more day.

Around The AFC East

  • With the sixth overall pick, the New York Jets selected safety Jamal Adams out of LSU, a natural leader and son of super bowl champion George Adams of the New York Giants.

  • The Buffalo Bills traded their 10th overall pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for the 27th overall pick and selected Tre’Davious White, cornerback out of LSU, presumably a Stephon Gilmore replacement.

  • The Miami Dolphins used the 22nd overall pick on outside linebacker Charles Harris out of Missouri, who has been compared to Connor Barwin.
