Panthers welcome Chancellor Adams, son of Rae Carruth, to game

Powerful moment on the sideline prior to Sunday’s Carolina Panthers game, as Chancellor Lee Adams, son of Rae Carruth, watched the team enter the field.

Adams is the son of Carruth and Cherica Adams; Carruth served nearly two decades in prison for the 1999 murder of Cherica Adams. At the time of the shooting, Adams was eight months pregnant with Chancellor Lee, and underwent an emergency C-section to save his life. Now 19 years old, Chancellor was delivered 10 weeks before his due date, and has cerebral palsy and brain damage after suffering oxygen deprivation during the shooting.

Panthers players welcome Adams

Chancellor Lee Adams attended Sunday’s game against the Ravens thanks to the generosity of Jason Underwood, a longtime Panthers PSL holder. On the sideline prior to the game, several Panthers players made a point of visiting with Adams:

Reunion with Carruth is unlikely

Underwood attempted to get Adams to a game last year, but Adams fell sick and couldn’t attend. Chancellor remains under the custody and care of his grandmother Saundra, Cherica’s mother, and she was with him on the sideline Sunday.

This past week, purely by coincidence, also saw the release of Carruth from prison. Carruth’s immediate future is uncertain. While in prison, he had sought to gain custody of Chancellor, but later recanted in the face of immense public criticism.
