Pakistan vs Netherlands LIVE: Result and reaction as Rauf takes three wickets and Babar Azam’s side win

Pakistan secured a comprehensive 81-run victory against a battling Netherlands to kickstart their World Cup campaign. Babar Azam’s side were in trouble after falling to 38-3 in the early stages but half-centuries from Saud Shakeel and Muhammad Rizwan saw them recover to post 286 after 49 overs.

Netherlands started brightly in their chase as Bas de Leede and Vikram Singh both reached their half-centuries as part of a 70-run stand. But when Singh fell, the Dutch middle order failed to provide support for De Leede who eventually fell for 67, with Scott Edward’s side losing their last 8 wickets for 85 runs as they were bowled out for 205.

Pakistan captain, Babar Azam, speaking after his side’s win

17:18 , Ben Fleming

“The way Hyderabad have supported [us], we’re very happy and the team has enjoyed their hospitality. I’m pretty satisfied. All credit to the bowlers, they started well and then we were able to take wickets in the middle and put pressure on them.

“We lost three wickets early but the way Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel started gave us momentum. The century partnership then put pressure on the Netherlands. I liked the way Saud built his innings, he’s improved a lot.”

More from Edwards on Logan van Beek’s potential injury

17:09 , Ben Fleming

“He is a key player but I haven’t spoken to him but he was pretty keen to get out there. We’ll assess [the injury] in the next few days.”

Netherlands captain, Scott Edwards, speaking after the game

17:08 , Ben Fleming

“It is a little bit disappointing. I thought we bowled and fielded really well, but to Pakistan’s credit, they made a few runs at the end. We felt it was about a par score and at 120-2 we felt we were well and truly in the game.”

“It is probably one that got away - we were in a pretty good position to win that. We know they have quality bowlers but they took a few wickets in the middle and that held us back.”

On Bas De Leede’s performance: “He is a quality cricketer, isn’t he? It is all three departments. I thought he bowled exceptionally well and his innings was awesome. We just needed someone to go with him.”

Saud Shakeel, player of the match, speaking after the match

16:57 , Ben Fleming

“I was very pleased with my performance. I tried to follow my basics and be positive and score runs for the team. There were nerves there, especially being three down, but I was fortunate that I got early boundaries. We spoke about being positive and the pressure would move to the Netherlands and that happened.

“The last two or three months I have been working on my game. I know I am going to bat at five for Pakistan so I’ve been trying to improve my attacking options and be brave to use them.”

Pakistan win by 81 runs

16:50 , Ben Fleming

At one stage, when Singh and De Leede were going along nicely, it looked like the Dutch may just threaten a shock victory. But the two lacked any meaningful support from those around them and when they both departed, the run chase capitulated, losing their last 8 wickets for 85 runs

Pakistan wobbled a bit with the bat at the start but they showed all their skill with the ball to run through the Netherlands and secure a healthy win which will aid their net run-rate tremendously.

WICKET! Van Meekeren b Rauf 7 (NED 205 all out)

16:46 , Ben Fleming

Rauf continues as Pakistan hunt for the final wicket. Rauf almost threatens the stumps as Van Beek misses a pretty straight one but the Dutch batsman survives.

But they do have the final wicket now! Rauf cleans up Van Meekeren and lets out an almighty roar.

Pakistan have a comprehensive 81-run victory and the perfect start to this World Cup.

Some words again from Van Meekeren towards the Pakistan quicks as they serve up short ball after short ball. I’d personally rather not anger Haris Rauf when he’s bowling at me but each to their own.

But it works for him! He crunches a cut through the point region for his first boundary of the day as the number eleven. Five runs from the over.

OUT! Bowled. Hasan Ali to Aryan Dutt. Length ball, off stump on the front foot working, hit pad.

WICKET! Dutt b Ali 1 (PAK 184-9)

16:28 , Ben Fleming

Cleaned him up!

Ali comes back into the attack and is straight into the wickets as he bowls Dutt with his first delivery. A bit of movement off the pitch as the ball deflects off the pads and onto the stumps.

Netherlands nine down now and surely closing in on defeat here.

Netherlands 184-8 (37) Van Beek 16, Dutt 0, Shadab 1-45 (8) target 287

16:26 , Ben Fleming

Back to the spin at both ends for Pakistan as Shadab comes into the attack. Pakistan will be after two more quick wickets to wrap this up but Van Beek has other ideas!

A huge six - down on one leg - flies into the crowd. That was some hit.

Eight off the over after that thunderous blow.

WICKET! Van der Merwe run out 4 (NED 176-8)

16:23 , Ben Fleming

Another ones goes as Van der Merwe is well out of his ground. He tries to set off for a quick single, forgetting that his partner, Van Beek, is struggling to run. He gets halfway down before turning back but it’s far too late by then and he’s comfortably run out.

That’s the end of the 36th over and Netherlands are now 176-8. That doesn’t look great for the men in orange.

Netherlands 174-7 (35) Van Beek 8, Van der Merwe 3, Shaheen 1-31 (7) target 287

16:18 , Ben Fleming

Some concern from Van Beek as he appears to be limping coming back for a second, there. Hopefully for the Netherlands that is just cramp. Well, nothing wrong with his timing - that is for sure - as he flicks one of his pads for four.

Pace from Shaheen! Angling in at Van Der Merwe who does superbly to angle the bat up and find a single down to third man as he falls to the floor. Some laughter between the two but that was vicious.

And now he nearly has Van Beek lbw! An action-packed over from the quick but that one is just drifting down leg.

Pakistan vs Netherlands

Netherlands 165-7 (34) Van Beek 1, Van der Merwe 2, Nawaz 1-29 (6) target 287

16:13 , Ben Fleming

Van Beek is next in but there’s so much to be done now for these two. Babar Azam’s changes with his bowlers have worked fantastically in this match and his team are right on top in this contest now.

Just two runs but the all-important wicket of De Leede in that over.

WICKET! De Leede b Nawaz 67 (NED 164-7)

16:09 , Ben Fleming

A huge wicket!

De Leede departs and that could be that. Nawaz gets one to turn and bounce as it beats the batsman’s edge and smashes into the stumps. The Dutch youngster has been superb today with ball and bat but he has to depart and Netherlands have a mountain to climb now.

Pakistan vs Netherlands

16:08 , Ben Fleming

Van der Merwe is the new man at the crease. He’s produced some handy cameo knocks for Netherlands and Somerset in his time but he’ll need a big innings here tonight to get Netherlands over the line.

De Leede is still hanging around, though, as he crunches another glorious straight drive to the ropes for four.

OUT! L.B.W. Shaheen Afridi to Saqib Zulfiqar. Length ball, outside off stump moves in front working, hit pad. Struck in front!

WICKET! Zulfiqar lbw b Shaheen 10 (NED 158-6)

16:03 , Ben Fleming

Shaheen strikes first ball after the drinks break!

A big wicket for Pakistan as the ball cannons into Zulfiqar’s pads and from that the left-arm angle, there was no point in reviewing. That was never missing.

Another wicket falls for Netherlands and the wheels are slowly falling off this run chase.

Pakistan vs Netherlands

15:59

31.6

Mohammad Nawaz to Bas de Leede. Stock length ball, middle stump on the back foot working, to short mid wicket for no runs, fielded by Ahmed.

Netherlands 158-5 (32) De Leede 63, Zulfiqar 10, Nawaz 0-27 (5) target 287

15:58 , Ben Fleming

A change at the other end, too, as Nawaz comes back in for Shadab but it’s Netherlands who are looking to kickstart their chase again as Zulfiqar clubs the spinner over short midwicket for a welcome boundary.

Six from the over and that will be drinks.

15:55 , Ben Fleming

Shaheen back into the attack with Babar wanting to conserve Rauf’s remaining overs. A late appeal for LBW as the ball catches De Leede’s pads but likely going down the leg side. A good start, regardless, for the returning quick with just two runs coming from the over.

15:50 , Ben Fleming

Another boundary for De Leede as he squirms the first ball of Shadab’s over behind square for four.

But now there’s some concern! Some quick hands from Rizwan to take off the bails but De Leede just gets his boot back over the line in time. A good slice of fortune, there, for the Netherlands.

Just the four off the over as we reach the 30-over mark.

149km per hour from Rauf! That is quick...

But it doesn’t matter to De Leede as he takes on the very next bouncer and sends it flying into the stands for six! Remarkable shot.

The Netherlands still have some fight in them yet - nine runs off that over.

This run chase will need a big knock from someone in an orange shirt and De Leede looks like the prime candidate as he finds a single to move him to his half-century. A fine knock from the youngster but plenty more to be done.
