Other Punters More Foolish than Raiders P Marquette King

This week, social exploded with the picture of Raiders punter Marquette King joking around with Denver CB Aqib Talib. From fan accusations of being a traitor to wanting to fight, King earned his fair share of critics this offseason. Was it wrong? Yes. Taking a photo mocking circumstances of a teammate is never a good move. However, punters are all a different breed. King is no exception. Here are a few notable examples of weirdness.

Pat McAfee: The recently retired Colts punter left the NFL to join Barstool Sports. Barstool Sports is a comedy sports website. Whether you find them funny is a matter of taste. McAfee retired this week at 29 to join a website. Although he left 2.75 million dollars on the table, McAfee seems happy with his decision. Throughout his career, McAfee became more famous for his words rather than punting. When your lone highlight is wiping out a 5’5″ kick returner, maybe comedy is a natural fit.

Chris Hansen: In 2003, the former Jacksonville punter entered the history books for the weirdest locker room injury. Jack Del Rio used the slogan, “Keep Chopping Wood” that year. Additionally, he installed a tree stump and ax as motivator. Players swung the ax while talker. Hansen, unfamiliar with the ax tried his luck. As a result, Hansen accidentally drove the ax into his foot, ending his season.

Todd Sauerbrun: The former Broncos and Patriots punted made more headlines for his off-field issues than performance. In 2004, Sauerbrun nabbed a DUI. Two years later, he served a four game suspension for using PEDs. In 2007, Denver police cited him for assault after beating up a cab driver.

While, Marquette King’s actions in Orlando weren’t the brightest, they could’ve been much worse. Should he use better judgment and tone it down? Probably. In reality, King needs to focus more on punting. The social media interaction is occasionally humorous. Yet, punting is what pays his bills. For the Raiders, employing a good punter is more important than paying a famous one.
