Orioles break out new dugout celebration: the Homer Hose

Last season the upstart Baltimore Orioles celebrated players' home runs by awarding them a chain necklace with an oversized O's medallion. But this year, they've come up with something completely different.

A new celebration made its debut Monday night at Camden Yards, with the Orioles pulling it out early and often against the Oakland A's.

Ryan Mountcastle slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, and when he returned to the dugout teammates were waiting for him with a bottle of water and a funnel attached to an orange-and-black striped rubber tube.

And thus was born ... the Homer Hose.

Outfielder Austin Hays says the water-themed idea is the brainchild of two Orioles players known as "the plumbers" – pitchers Cole Irvin and Keegan Akin.

While the Orioles players may call it something different, Kyle Gibson – the winning pitcher in Monday's 5-1 victory over the A's – revealed the official name when he met with reporters afterward.

“It’s a homer hose," Gibson said. "Just like as a kid, you go out back and you take a drink from the water hose after you play outside playing Wiffle ball.”

After Mountcastle's refreshing celebration, catcher Adley Rutschman got into the act two innings later with a solo shot and Hays followed up with a homer of his own in the sixth.

"I love it," Rutschman said. "We’re just huge proponents of staying hydrated."

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde wasn't aware of the new celebration and didn't see it take place during the game.

"I want guys to be loose," Hyde said after being informed of the new tradition. "I like celebration stuff. I think it brings teams together. If the guys like it, then I’m all for it."
