The Open 2023 LIVE: Second round golf leaderboard as Tommy Fleetwood chases Brian Harman

Tommy Fleetwood will look to build on his brilliant start after he rode a wave of home support to the top of the leaderboard in the Open Championship on Thursday.

Roared on by a partisan crowd at Royal Liverpool, Fleetwood carded an opening 66 to share the clubhouse lead with South African amateur Christo Lamprecht and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo on five under par.

Antoine Rozner, Adrian Otaegui and Brian Harman were all a shot behind, with former champion Stewart Cink – who denied Tom Watson a fairytale victory in 2009 – part of a group on three under which included US Open champion Wyndham Clark.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy battled back from a poor start to keep himself in the championship at level par. McIlroy, who lifted the Claret Jug at Hoylake in 2014, was two over par after 13 holes before making birdies on the 14th and 15th and a crucial par on the 18th after needing two shots to escape a greenside bunker. He will be among the morning starters on Friday, looking to close the gap.

The Open 2023: Bogey start for defending champion

15:20 , Ben Fleming

Clark -3 (1), Schauffele -1 (1), Smith +2 (1)

Not the start Cam Smith would have wanted after a bogey five at the first moves him to +2. He’s playing alongside Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark who sit at -1 and -3 respectively.

The Open 2023: Birdie for McIlroy at the last

15:16 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy -1 (70), Rahm +2 (70), Rose +6 (74)

A slightly awkward third shot for Rory as his second shot comes to rest left of the green with bunkers between him and the green. Nicely done, though, by the Northern Irishman who gets it to eight feet before nursing in a birdie putt to finish. -1 is some way off Harman but he’s by no means out of it and has been some way off his ball-striking best so far.

It’s an infuriating lip-out at the last for Rahm who makes bogey to end at +2. It’s also a one-under-par round but Rahm looks far from pleased and who could blame him? It’s been nowhere near his high standards and he’ll need a monster weekend to trouble the leaders.

Rose signs off with a par but at +6, his tournament will be over.

The Open 2023: Day starting fast

15:11 , Ben Fleming

Spieth -3 (4), Day -1 (4), Fitzpatrick +1 (4)

Spieth rolls in a solid par putt to continue his good start to the round. He’s joined in the red by Jason Day after the Aussie’s good birdie on the third.

The Open 2023: Back-to-back bogeys for Homa

15:09 , Ben Fleming

Homa -1 (17), Hatton -2 (17), Morikawa +5 (17)

No doubt, more frustration for Homa who gives away another shot having flailed left with his tee shot into the 17th. Back to -1 for American heading up the last.

Hatton makes his par as does Morikawa, who at +5, needs at least a birdie on the 18th to have some chance of making the weekend.

The Open 2023: Fleetwood underway

15:06 , Ben Fleming

Fleetwood -5 (1), Scheffler E (1), Scott +1 (1)

Well, here he is. Tommy lad, approaches the first tee to a warm reception from his home crowd. He left the grounds yesterday with a share of the lead but now he tees off five strokes behind Brian Harman after the American’s scintillating round earlier in the day. Fleetwood will want to make a dent into that lead but can’t get too aggressive and face giving away any more of an advantage.

It’s a solid par at the first for him with his playing partner, Adam Scott, missing a good chance for birdie.

Scottie? Well, it’s the same as usual for him as of late. More putting woes as the world number one sees a five-foot putt slide past the hole. An opening bogey for him.

The Open 2023: Final hole birdie for Hovland

15:00 , Ben Fleming

Hovland E (72), Finau +6 (75), Thomas +11 (71)

A battling round comes to an end for Victor Hovland with a welcome birdie on the final hole. A one-over-par round of 72 leaves him at even par for the tournament but in tricky morning conditions, that’s a more than solid effort from the Norwegian.

There will be disappointment for Tony Finau who ended with three bogeys in his last four to sit at +6 - that will be an early flight home for him and his fellow countrymen, Justin Thomas. Ironically, after his shocking round of 81 yesterday, the two-time major champion shot the best round in this group with an even-par 71.

The Open 2023: Bogey for Homa

14:55 , Ben Fleming

Homa -2 (16), Hatton -2 (16)

Just two pars since the fifth hole for Homa now as he can’t quite scramble from the back of the 16th green to save par. He drops back to -2 alongside his playing partner, Tyrell Hatton, who makes par.

The Open 2023: Back-to-back birdies for Rahm

14:49 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy E (17), Rahm +1 (17), Rose +6 (17)

Well, the best shot of the day into 17 has already been won by Travis Smyth after his earlier hole-in-one but there won’t be many better than Rahm’s approach off the tee which settles 7 feet from the hole. The Spaniard knocks it in for his second successive birdie and barring a disaster on 18, he should now safely make the weekend.

Rory ends up in the semi-rough out to the left but does well to get up and down to save par. Rose, too, makes par but looks likely to miss the cut regardless.

The Open 2023: Early birdie for Spieth

14:36 , Ben Fleming

Spieth -3 (2), Day E (2), Fitzpatrick +1 (2)

Some of the afternoon wave are getting underway and the first of those is Jordan Spieth, Jason Day at Matt Fitzpatrick. Day kicked us off with a birdie at the first but it’s Spieth who makes the most of the second with a huge drive and a chip to set up a birdie three. Up to -3 now for the former Open champion.

The Open 2023: Pars for Rory and Rahm

14:34 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy E (16), Rahm +2 (16), Rose +6 (16)

High into the sky with the iron from the fairway for Rory and safely aboard the green. It’s a lengthy left-to-right look for birdie but it just misses on the high side. It races by a bit too much for his liking but it’s in for par.

Rahm’s second trickles into the bunker and it’s another sandy scramble required for the Spaniard. He’s got work to do to save his par but knocks it in comfortably to stay at +2

The Open 2023: Birdies for Homa and Hatton

14:30 , Ben Fleming

Homa -3 (15), Hatton -2 (15)

Another group comes through the 15th and more birdies forthcoming. Homa bounces back after his bogey at the hole prior to get back up to -3 while Hatton sees his eagle effort come up short but taps in to move further up the leaderboard to -2.

The Open 2023: Bogey on 9 as Jordan makes turn

14:26 , Ben Fleming

Jordan -2 (9)

A shame for the local lad who misses a par putt on the ninth to drop back to -2 as he makes the turn. Still, even par for the round and right in this tournament.

The Open 2023: Birdie for Rahm as Rory bogeys

14:17 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy E (15), Rahm +2 (15), Rose +6 (15)

Rahm’s approach into par five is a good one, running through to just off the back off the green. It’s a simple enough up and down for a golfer of his quality, and he makes no mistake to ease the pressure on his chances of missing the cut.

It’s the complete opposite for Rory, however, who makes a costly bogey six. From the fairway bunker, he chips out before finding the greenside rough. Like Finau moments earlier, he can’t get up and down to save par and moves back to even par. Less than ideal.

Rose makes a much-needed birdie but he’ll need two, most likely three in his final three holes to make the cut.

The Open 2023: Topsy-turvy round for Homa

14:13 , Ben Fleming

Homa -2 (14), Hatton -1 (14)

Homa has made just one par in his last nine holes. There have been five birdies in that run but also a double bogey and two bogeys. The last bogey comes at the tricky 14th as the American falls back to -2 but with a chance to immediately bounce back at the par-five 15th.

The Open 2023: Hovland back to level par, bogey for Finau

14:08 , Ben Fleming

Hovland E (15), Finau +4 (15)

Hovland takes care of the par-five 15th, rolling a shortish birdie putt to get back to level par. On the other hand, it’s a really bad hole for Tony Finau who finds the fairway bunker off the tee, followed by the greenside rough after his third shot.

The American can’t get up and down to save par and makes a bogey six. He’ll have been eyeing up birdie but with that bogey, he’s now below the cut line and in need of a birdie coming in.

The Open 2023: The dropped shots for Lamprecht

14:05 , Ben Fleming

Lamprecht (a) -2 (4)

I’m sure the South African wouldn’t have thought it was all going to be plain sailing after his first round but he’s certainly come crashing back to earth after this start.

Another wild tee shot, another bogey and having started the day as the overnight leader, he’s now eight off the pace.

The Open 2023: Good par saves for Rory and Rahm

14:03 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy -1 (14), Rahm +3 (14), Rose +7 (14)

The tricky 14th is next and both Rahm and McIlroy have work to do after chipping onto the green. Two very nice putting strokes and two very helpful par saves follow.

Not so for Justin Rose who drops further back to +7. His tournament looks to be coming to a close.

The Open 2023: Eagle at the last for Harman to shoot 65

13:56 , Ben Fleming

Harman -10 (65)

Wow, wow, wow. It just gets better for the leader on the final hole. Stripped down the middle off the tee before chasing an iron up onto the green for a look at eagle.

It’s 14 feet but with his supreme touch on the greens, it feels like four feet and in it goes!

A remarkable bogey-free round of 65 for Harman who rockets up to -10 and currently leads the Open by five shots.

Fleetwood is still to come this afternoon but he’ll have to play superbly well to get up around Harman who has made this course look far, far easier than it looks.

The Open 2023: Clutch par save for Homa

13:54 , Ben Fleming

Homa -3 (13), Hatton -1 (13)

Some trouble off the tee for Homa who goes right of the green. He leaves himself around 25 feet for the par but rattles it in comfortably. A pump of the first for the American who knows how big that was.

Hatton shows some terrific touch around the green to chip close and save par.

The Open 2023: Another early bogey for Lamprecht

13:50 , Ben Fleming

Lamprecht (a) -3 (3)

A real lack of control from the big South African off the tee as another flails out to the left. From there, it’s an uphill battle and ends with another dropped shot early in his round.

The Open 2023: Hovland over par

13:47 , Ben Fleming

Hovland +1 (14), Finau +3 (14)

Trouble off the tee for Viktor Hovland who can only hack out from the fairway bunker. His follow-up approach in gives him a look at saving par but it slides by for the Norwegian who drops to +1 for the tournament.

Finau catches a great break with his approach into the green as his ball hops out of the left rough before trickling down onto the green. He can’t take advantage, however, and has to settle for a par.

The Open 2023: Birdies for Homa and Hatton

13:43 , Ben Fleming

Homa -3 (12), Hatton -1 (12)

What’s the best way to respond to a double bogey on the 11th? By birdieing the 12th, obviously. That’s exactly what Max Homa does with his birdie effort from the fringe just short of the green. A battling performance from the American who gets back to level par for his round today.

Hatton found his way onto the putting surface and he also cashes in for his second birdie in three holes. Up to -1 and into the red for the Englishman.

The Open 2023: Rahm and McIlroy toiling away

13:39 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy -1 (13), Rahm +3 (13), Rose +6 (13)

It looks a real battle out there at the minute with Rory and Rahm experiencing that first-hand. McIlroy has work to do from the sand while Rahm is just off the green.

Classy stuff from the pair, though, as they both get up and down nicely to save their pars.

The Open 2023: Another par save for Harman

13:37 , Ben Fleming

Harman -8 (17)

A slight bit of trouble for the American off the tee as his iron into the par three just drops into the bunker. It’s well dug out of the sand and he’s got just over seven feet for par...nerveless stuff by the American who fires it right into the heart of the cup.

A near-perfect round of golf from the leader who has a final chance at a birdie on the par-five 18th.

The Open 2023: Hovland steadies the ship

13:36 , Ben Fleming

Hovland E (13), Finau +3 (13)

After a couple of bogeys, Hovland steadies the ship with a pair of pars, the second coming after a very solid nine-foot putt. Finau makes his par too as he continues to flirt dangerously with the cut line.

The Open 2023: Double bogey for Homa

13:32 , Ben Fleming

Homa -2 (11), Hatton E (11), Morikawa +5 (11)

The American has been so consistent off the tee so far this tournament but a wild tee shot on the 11th gets him in all sorts of bother. From there, he’s in trouble and a four-foot missed putt for bogey means he walks to the 12th tee back down at -2 after a double bogey.

His fellow American and playing partner, Morikawa, also drops a shot with his third bogey of the day. A big finish needed for him as well. Hatton makes par.

The Open 2023: Tidy par save for Harman

13:29 , Ben Fleming

Harman -8 (16)

He’s only got two holes to go now but he’ll walk off 16 very happy with a two-putt par from over 60 feet. If he can get in the clubhouse as he is, that will be a mighty-fine effort and would almost certainly see him out in the final pairing tomorrow.

The Open 2023: McIlroy missed birdie opportunity

13:26 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy -1 (12), Rahm +3 (12), Rose +6 (12)

It’s a sparkling tee shot from Rory into the 12th green from about 120 yards which comes to rest about seven feet from the hole. He’s initially over the putt but comes out of his stroke after a gust of wind blows through. That clearly puts him off as he then misses the resulting effort, pushing it out to e right.

Rahm escapes with par after a tidy chip but it’s another bogey for Rose who will need something special down the stretch if he’s to make the cut.

The Open 2023: Surprise names up the leaderboard

13:23 , Ben Fleming

Sharma -3 (8), Stewart -4 (7), Jordan -3 (5)

Three names many might not be aware of have made a mighty fine start to their second round. We spoke about local lad, Matthew Jordan, earlier who has added to his overnight score with his second birdie of the day.

Alongside him at -3 is India’s Shubhankar Sharma who has two wins on the DP World Tour. A bogey at eight has pegged him back to after an early bogey but he’s still in a tie for sixth right now.

A shot better than those two is Scotland’s Michael Stewart who is one under for his round and -4 for the tournament.

The Open 2023: Nervy start for Lamprecht

13:19 , Ben Fleming

Lamprecht -4 (1)

The big-hitting South African amateur enjoyed a day to remember on Thursday as he ended with a share of the lead at -5. It’s not been an ideal start today, however, with a bogey at the first followed by a wild tee shot on the second which has gone way right.

The Open 2023: First bogey of the day for Rory

13:15 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy -1 (11), Rahm +3 (11), Rose +5 (11)

McIlroy gets himself in trouble off the tee and needs some up-and-down magic to keep his par. It’s 14 feet for the par...but he can’t make it. Back to -1 for the tournament now for Rory.

Rahm has steam rising out of both ears such is the frustration the Spaniard has with his round so far, but he composes himself well to make a par to stay at +3.

The Open 2023: Birdie for Hatton

13:13 , Ben Fleming

Homa -4 (10), Hatton E (10)

A much-needed birdie for Hatton as he makes the turn. Back to even par now as the Englishman continues to battle away in these trickier conditions.

Homa stays at -4 with a tidy par.

Just Stop Oil protester handed to police by Billy Horschel at The Open

13:08 , Jack Rathborn

Just Stop Oil protesters set off an orange flare next to the 17th green at the British Open on Friday before being driven off the course by the police in a golf buggy.

American golfer Billy Horschel helped to hand over one protester to police after orange powder was seen near the edge of the green just short of the putting surface.

Despite the disturbance, the second-round play continued without any delay.

The environmental group have targeted a number of high-profile sporting events this summer, including the second Ashes Test at Lords - where England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow physically manhandled one pitch invader to the boundary - and Wimbledon, where three people ran onto the court throwing orange paper and jigsaw pieces.

Golfer hands over Just Stop Oil protester to police at The Open

The Open 2023: Leader Harman pars 15

13:06 , Ben Fleming

Harman -8 (15)

Harman would have no doubt been sizing up the par-five 15th as another opportunity for a birdie but he gets himself in the greenside rough after three and a poor putt by his standards sees a birdie opportunity pass him by. Still, that’s ten straight pars to go with his four birdies in his first five holes.

The American leads by three.

The Open 2023: Hovland drops another

13:05 , Ben Fleming

Hovland E (11), Finau +3 (11)

Like Rahm, Viktor Hovland is moving in the wrong direction so far today. He started well, with three birdies in his first five holes but three bogeys in his last four, including one at the 11th sees him drop back to even par for the round.

The Open 2023: Just Stop Oil protesters halt play

13:00 , Ben Fleming

Another look at the protesters earlier on the 17th green with American golfer, Billy Horschel doing his best Jonny Bairstow impression as he helps to escort one of the golfers off the green.

The Open 2023: Rahm bogeys tenth

12:58 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy -2 (10), Rahm +3 (10), Rose +5 (10)

Hmmm. Having made a nice start to his second round, the Spaniard is back where he started the round. It’s a lovely chip to give him a look at saving par, but he lets out a loud expletive as his par effort lips out of the cup.

McIlroy and Rose lag their puts close to ensure they escape with timely pars.

The Open 2023: Just Stop Oil protesters halt play

12:56 , Ben Fleming

The group have now put up a statement, claiming responsibility for the protest.

They said: “Three Just Stop Oil Supporters have disrupted The British Open - they demand that the UK government halts all new oil and gas projects.

“There will be no more holes in one when our society collapses. We must stop our government’s 100 new oil and gas licenses before they go onto cause more harm.”

The Open 2023: Just Stop Oil protesters halt play

12:54 , Ben Fleming

Well, we suspected it might happen but the 17th hole has been the target of a protest from Just Stop Oil.

American golfer Billy Horschel intervened to help remove protesters who invaded the 17th green at Royal Liverpool on the second day of the Open Championship.

The 36-year-old escorted a woman wearing a Just Stop Oil T-shirt covered in orange paint off the green of the Hoylake links and into the custody of a police officer.

Both her and a man wearing a similar T-shirt were both handcuffed and marched off the course by several police officers.

Just Stop Oil protesters have disrupted several major sporting events in England this year including the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and the Ashes cricket test at Lord's.

The Open 2023: Three in a row for Homa

12:49 , Ben Fleming

Homa -4 (9), Hatton +1 (9), Morikawa +4 (9)

Very nicely done, Max. Fresh off two birdies in a row, the American makes it three in three with a fine iron into the ninth hole. He’s up into a tie for fourth now and -1 for his round today.

Par for Morikawa but an untimely bogey for Hatton as this trio make the turn.

The Open 2023: Close shave for Hovland

12:43 , Ben Fleming

Hovland -1 (10), Finau +3 (10), Thomas +11 (10)

Not the ideal length for Hovland who eyes up a 40-foot effort for an unlikely birdie. It’s tracking fantastically though but just lips out with the final roll! Unlucky but a great effort.

A par for Finau too and a welcome first birdie of the day for Justin Thomas who will just want to try and find some consistency after his disastrous first round yesterday.

The Open 2023: Back-to-back birdies for Homa

12:38 , Ben Fleming

Homa -3 (8), Hatton E (8), Morikawa +4 (8)

Homa has been very consistent with his plan to lay back off the tee and hit longer irons into these greens and right now the plan is working very nicely. Another medium-length putt for birdie which he converts! Back up to -3 now and level par for his round today.

Hatton and Morikawa make par to stay as they were.

The Open 2023: Lucky break for Rory, bogey for Rahm

12:35 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy -2 (9), Rahm +2 (9), Rose +5 (9)

Well, you have to take the good breaks when you get them. McIlroy’s drive ends up left in some thick rough but he can get a wedge to it from an uphill lie. He catches it hot but it cannons off the flagstick before dropping down near the hole. That really could have gone anywhere but he takes advantage to make his par.

Rahm, however, has no such luck. His ball ended up just off the green but he can’t quite convert the tricky two-putt for par and the Spaniard drops his first shot of the day.

Another bogey for Rose, however, who ended up in a similar spot to Hovland off the tee. He needs a big back nine to make the weekend.

The Open 2023: Min Woo Lee and Otaegui in the clubhouse

12:31 , Ben Fleming

Lee -3 (68), Otaegui -2 (73)

A couple of very respectable rounds for these too. Min Woo saved par well on the 17th before seeing a birdie effort on the last come up just short. Still, a three-under-par 68 has him sitting just outside the top five currently.

Adrian Otaegui may not have made a birdie all round, but a two-over-par round of 73 is no disaster for the Spaniard who is just outside the top 10 at -2.

The Open 2023: Bogey as Hovland makes turn

12:23 , Ben Fleming

Hovland -1 (9), Finau +3 (9)

Viktor catches a nice break on the par-three ninth as his ball hops past the bunker and settles in the run-off area just right off the green. He can’t take advantage of the good break, however, as he missed an eight footer to save his par.

Back to -1 and level par for his round today as he makes the turn.

The Open 2023: No mistakes at 8 for Rory and Rahm

12:20 , Ben Fleming

McIlroy -2 (8), Rahm +1 (8), Rose +4 (8)

Both Rahm and Rory go long with their irons into eight and need a bit of creativity from the back rough. No problem for two of the game’s premier plays as they safely find their pars.

A nice par as well for Justin Rose who continues to battle against the cut line.

The Open 2023: Home-club hero Jordan underway

12:18 , Ben Fleming

Jordan -2 (2)

Matthew Jordan, who has been a member at Royal Liverpool since he was eight, had the honour of hitting the first tee shot yesterday to get the tournament underway. It was a very steady round of 69 yesterday, and he’s back up at -2 for the tournament as he birdies the second to cancel out his opening-hole bogey.

The Open 2023: Bounce-back birdie for Homa

12:16 , Ben Fleming

Homa -2 (7), Hatton E (7), Morikawa +4 (7)

Max Homa has had a busy start to his round with three bogeys in his first six. But it’s an expert response at the following hole, as the American stuffs one to within two feet with his iron approach. A tap-in birdie for him and back up to -2 for his round.

Pars for Hatton and Morikawa who sit at level par and +4 respectively.

The Open 2023: Work to be done for Finau

12:12 , Ben Fleming

Hovland -2 (8), Finau +3 (8)

Hovland dropped one on the seventh but he has a good look at birdie to get it back on 8...not to be. Just wide of the mark. Still, well positioned at -2. One person who isn’t sitting as comfortably is his playing partner Tony Finau. The big American misses a tiddler for par and drops his second shot in three holes. Back at +3 now, which is around where the projected cut currently sits.

The Open 2023: Huge par save for Harman

12:07 , Ben Fleming

Harman -8 (12)

The American is a real fighter and there’s no better example than on the 12th. He has to chip out backwards having found the fairway bunker but faced with a near-certain bogey, he chips in from the semi-rough just off the green to save his par. Remarkable save and his bogey-free round continues.

The Open 2023: Min Woo making a move

12:04 , Ben Fleming

Min Woo Lee -3 (16), Grillo -4 (13)

Brian Harman is putting together the round of the day so far but a close second is that of Min Woo Lee as the Aussie pours in a putt on the 16th to move -3 for the round and the tournament.

Another battling away well at the top of the leaderboard is one of the overnight leaders, Grillo. The Argentine had a tough start with two bogeys in his first three but his second birdie of the day at 13 has him back to -4 and tie for fourth.

The Open 2023: Rose on a roll

12:02 , Luke Baker

McIlroy -2 (7), Rahm +1 (7), Rose +4 (7)

McIlroy and co moving towards the turn as they complete the 7th. Justin Rose is the star of the show as he makes birdie by holing out from around 10 feet. It moves him to +4 and could be very useful in his battle to make the cut.

McIlroy and Rahm have long-shot birdie chances, no dice but safely in for par.

The Open 2023: McIlroy’s bunker brilliance

11:53 , Luke Baker

Here was that exquisite bunker shot from Rory McIlroy earlier. He’s making a habit of those this week at Hoylake...

The Open 2023: Homa and Hatton take advantage of par five

11:48 , Luke Baker

Homa -2 (5), Hatton E (5)

Max Homa and Tyrrell Hatton take advantage of the par-five 5th. Birdies for both men - Hatton back to where he started the day at evens and Homa getting one of his two shots back to go to -2, six back of Harman.

The Open 2023: Jon Rahm goes back to back

11:46 , Luke Baker

McIlroy -2 (6), Rahm +1 (6), Rose +5 (6)

A stunning tee shot at the par-three 6th, which is playing tough, from Jon Rahm and from 15 feet, he sinks it. Back-to-back birdies at 5 and 6 for Rahm to move to +1 - making his charge?

Safe pars for McIlroy and Rose - no mean feat at this hole.

The Open 2023: HOLE IN ONE!

11:34 , Luke Baker

And we have our first hole in one of the 151st Open! And the first ever at the 17th at Royal Liverpool!

Travis Smyth is at +10 for the tournament but he now has a memory to last a lifetime! The 28-year-old Australian tees it up at the intimidating 17th and sees his ball pitch on the green, before bouncing into the hole. It’s brilliant from Smyth!

Huge roar from the crowd that can be heard all over the course. He goes to +8 and won’t be making the weekend but that’s class.

The Open 2023: Bunker time for McIlroy

11:31 , Luke Baker

McIlroy -2 (5), Rahm +2 (5), Rose +5 (5)

Rory McIlroy has made three straight pars since his opening birdie. He’s got a tricky bunker shot at the 5th but he’s there in two, so a birdie awaits if he gets up and down.

Wow! What a stunning bunker shot, not got loads of room with the riveted face in front of him but gets the ball up, spins it and gets it to stop a few feet from the hole. And the birdie is rolled in.

His playing partners also impress as Jon Rahm makes a tricky birdie putt from 15 feet and Justin Rose has an even tougher bunker shot than McIlroy, closer to the face but gets the ball up and make his birdie.

The Open 2023: Hovland on the charge

11:24 , Luke Baker

Hovland -3 (5), Finau +1 (5)

Ooh, hello Viktor Hovland! A crushed drive and superb long iron get him on the green in two at the par-five 5th.

A 20-foot putt for eagle and it’s a great roll! Juuuuust doesn’t turn at the end so a kick-in birdie instead. Nicely up to -3 and into the top five. Playing partner Tony Finau also finds birdie and moves up to one-over for the tournament.

The Open 2023: Harman ticking along

11:20 , Luke Baker

Harman -8 (9)

Brian Harman’s putting has always been his strength but he’s striking the ball beautifully today.

At the par-three 9th, playing about 226 yards, he flights the ball perfectly beyond the pin to give himself a decent birdie look. The putt doesn’t drop but that’s a very tricky hole beautifully navigated.

He reaches the turn in 31, has climbed to eight-under and leads the Open by three strokes. He’d sign for -8 at the end of his round right now, for sure.

The Open 2023: Hovland and Lee on the birdie train

11:10 , Luke Baker

Hovland -2 (4), Lee -2 (13)

Viktor Hovland nicely bounces back from his bogey at the 3rd by birdieing the 4th. Lovely approach and makes the 10-footer to climb to -2. A par five up next for the Norwegian.

Talented Australian Min Woo Lee is also climbing the leaderboard. He started his day at level par and actually fell to +2 through four holes but an eagle at the 5th, a birdie at 9 and another at 12 has him at -2

The Open 2023: Wind starting to pick up

11:05 , Luke Baker

The wind is really starting to pick up. 15-20mph gusts now. Course conditions look like they will only get trickier. Brian Harman has done well to make hay while the sun is shining.

The Open 2023: Bogeys for Homa and Hovland

10:53 , Luke Baker

Homa -2 (2), Hovland -1 (3)

A disappointing couple of minutes for the H’s, Hovland and Homa. Hovland leaks an approach right from the 3rd fairway and leaves himself too much to do following a chip from the rough to go back to one-under.

Meanwhile, Homa finds the greenside bunker at 2 and a surprisingly poor shot from the sand leaves him with 15 feet or so for par. Close but no cigar. Drops to -2

The Open 2023: McIlroy misses chance as Rose struggles

10:50 , Luke Baker

McIlroy -1 (3), Rahm +3 (3), Rose +5 (3)

Oh no, Justin Rose. The former major and Olympic champion plays a shot that we’ve all hit when out for a weekend round. Centre of the fairway at 3 but shanks his iron right, club goes flying and the ball flies into the crowd, out of bounds. His second attempt at it is much better and goes to within a few feet but the damage is done - another bogey

It’s a different story for McIlroy though. A gorgeous second shot, drawing into the back left flag, leaves him a brilliant look at birdie from about four feet. No! It’s not there, lips out. That’s a bad miss - a great chance to move to two-under is squandered.

Walking with Rory: The sights and sounds of an Open round with McIlroy

10:42 , Luke Baker

As Rory McIlroy plots his way round the course for his second round, why not check out my piece from yesterday as I walked 18 holes with the four-time major champion

Come on Roryyyy.

The simple refrain soundtracks every round of golf Rory McIlroy plays. When that round is on home shores and the stakes are as high as they are at the 151st Open Championship at Hoylake, it becomes almost incessant.

The bigger the moment or the greater the shot produced, the more elongated and insistent that second syllable becomes.

Come on Roryyyyyyyyyy.

The Open 2023: Homa up and running

10:39 , Luke Baker

Homa -3 (1), Hatton E (1), Morikawa +3 (1)

The always-popular and extremely likeable Max Homa is one of those clutch of players who have proven their class on the PGA Tour but are hunting for their first major (think Schauffele, Cantlay, Finau, Burns etc). He made a great start to his quest at Hoylake yesterday with a three-under round of 68.

He has to battle at the 1st today but a great putt salvages par and keeps him at -3. Tyrrell Hatton also makes par but 2021 Open winner Collin Morikawa sees a shot slip away.

The Open 2023: McIlroy and Rahm make par

10:35 , Luke Baker

McIlroy -1 (2), Rahm +3 (2), Rose +4 (2)

McIlroy playing from the fairway at 2 and it’s a decent but unspectacular shot into the centre of the green. Outside birdie chance, nice pace and a simple par.

Jon Rahm also makes his par after his ball clings to the front edge of the green but Justin Rose bogeys to go to four-over.

The Open 2023: Streak come to an end

10:32 , Luke Baker

A couple of streaks come to an end. Brian Harman’s birdie run finishes as he makes par at the 6th, although he won’t be too unhappy sitting at -8, and Adrian Otaegui’s run of 10 pars is ended with a bogey at 11 to drop back to -3.

The Open 2023: Hovland’s birdie

10:23 , Luke Baker

Hovland -2 (2), Finau +2 (2), Thomas +11 (2)

Here’s that Hovland birdie from earlier. He has another great birdie look on the 2nd but this time his putt comes up just short. A good start for the Norwegian though.

The Open 2023: Harman hot streak continues

10:21 , Luke Baker

Harman -8 (5)

Deary me, Brian Harman is absolutely tearing Royal Liverpool a new one today. His second shot at the par-five 5th ends up slightly left of the green, in the rough but he’s able to get up and down for a fourth consecutive birdie!

The American is now at eight-under and three strokes clear of Lamprecht and Fleetwood, having started the day one behind. On the flip side, Adrian Otaegui is Nick Faldo-ing it today. 10 straight pars to begin his round and the Spaniard holding on to his position of tied fourth at -4.

The Open 2023: McIlroy off to a flyer

10:16 , Luke Baker

McIlroy -1 (1), Rahm +3 (1), Rose +3 (1)

A stunning second shot from Rory McIlroy as he flights the ball to the left of the flag from 172 yards, it works slightly to the right and ends up around 10 feet away. A glorious birdie opportunity and he rolls the ball, a little right to left turn, into the centre of the cup. What a start! He’s up to one-under.

Jon Rahm unlucky not to follow suit as a pacy long-distance birdie putt rattles the hole but stays out. Justin Rose also scrambles par from the left rough.

The Open 2023: Strong start for Hovland

10:11 , Luke Baker

Hovland -2 (1), Finau +2 (1), Thomas +11 (1)

You can’t play the 1st much better than Viktor Hovland just did. Tee shot down the fairway and with 186 yards to go, a flick of the wrist sends the ball about six feet past the pin. He rolls in the birdie putt and climbs to two-under.

Tony Finau has to take his second shot from Liverpool city centre he went so far right but gets the ball off the right edge of the green and gets up and down to save par

The Open 2023: Brian Harman extends his lead

10:08 , Luke Baker

Harman -7 (4)

Wow! Brian Harman is on a heater. A third bridie in a row for the left-hander as he makes three at the 4th and he’s at -7, two shots clear of the field. He’s just striped a tee shot down the fairway at the par-five 5th as well, so another stroke gained could be on its way.

Tommy Fleetwood might find himself trailing by five by the time he tees off this afternoon!

The Open 2023: Rory McIlroy underway

10:04 , Luke Baker

McIlroy E, Rahm +3, Rose +3

That was some reception for McIlroy and he repays the patrons by flushing a drive down the fairway. It flirts with the right rough but he’s found short grass. Much better than his drive left at the 1st yesterday.

Jon Rahm follows suit and that’s A1 position for the Spaniard who was getting incredibly angry with himself in round 1. Justin Rose rounds out the group and slides his drive into the left rough. That might be a nasty lie as it looks like it sat down in the long grass. Rose bogeyed this hole on Thursday after finding the fairway bunker and could have more issues

The Open 2023: Heeeere’s Rory

09:58 , Luke Baker

Roars on the first tee and that can only mean one thing. Rory McIlroy (E) has come to the teebox. He’s about to get his second round underway alongside Jon Rahm (+3) and Justin Rose (+3).

Good and bad from McIlroy yesterday (twas ever thus) but he’s still well in this tournament and that par save at 18 may have given him some momentum

The Open 2023: Fun group alert!

09:56 , Luke Baker

A fun trio have just begun their second round and they’re the threesome in front of Rory McIlroy and co. Viktor Hovland (-1), Tony Finau (+2) and Justin Thomas (+11 - not a typo) tee off at the 1st.

Oooof. That’s waaaaaaay left by Finau, deep into the patrons. Lots of people have been going into the left rough on the 1st but that’s extreme. Thomas - who had a disaster of a day yesterday to post 11-over - is into the right rough and Hovland booms one down the fairway. The Norwegian is moving ever closer to a first major - is this the week?

The Open 2023: Brian Harman moves to the top

09:44 , Luke Baker

Well, well, well. We have a new solo leader of the 151st Open Championship. Brian Harman has come out firing this morning and after his birdie at 2, he finds another at 3 with a 15-footer down the hill to climb to six-under. sliding ahead of Fleetwood and Lamprecht.

His tee shot is nicely on the fairway at 4 as well, so another birdie look incoming?

The Open 2023: Not long until Rory McIlroy on course

09:37 , Luke Baker

We’re less than 30 minutes away from Rory McIlroy teeing off. Remember, he is level par overnight, five shots off the lead. As he himself said, “I’ll need to shoot something in the 60s tomorrow and I will be right there for the weekend.”

Things are less rosy (if you’ll excuse the pun, actually don’t - I knew exactly what I was doing) for McIlroy’s playing partners Justin Rose and Jon Rahm. Both at +3 and potentially battling to make the cut.

Here’s a reminder of McIlroy’s extraordinary par save at the 18th last night to keep him at evens.

The Open 2023: Harman rises and Grillo falls

09:26 , Luke Baker

That superb putt by Emiliano Grillo last night is starting to feel further and further away. He made a double bogey on the 2nd hole this morning after finding a bunker and has just followed that up with a bogey at 3 as his par putt slips wide. A flinch of frustration for the Argentine as he’s suddenly three shots back at -2, having started at -5.

But a new name has replaced him alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Christo Lamprecht at the top. Lefty Brian Harman is the new co-leader of the Open as he digs out a birdie at 2 thanks to a gorgeous iron shot.

Grillo moves atop the leaderboard

08:55 , Luke Baker

Tommy Fleetwood took the headlines yesterday, while amateur Christo Lamprecht upset the apple cart by also leading the Open. But there’s a third man at -5 and he moved there late in the day.

Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo sunk this monster putt to post a five-under round of 66 and will look to stay in contention today

Notable tee times this afternoon

Otaegui (-4) carves a draw off the fifth tee box and finds the short stuff.

Former Open champion Francesco Molinari, still with hopes of a home Ryder Cup this year, just about, will hope to go low today. The Italian, who starts on +2, can’t find the fairway.

It’s five straight pars to start the second round for Romain Langasque, who is -1. While Alex Fitzpatrick, brother of former US Open champion Matt, has back-to-back birdies to make the turn in 34, he’s +2 overall and -1 for his round. Impressive from the youngster after coming through qualifying.

The Open 2023

08:29 , Jack Rathborn

Emiliano Grillo, co-leader no less at -5 with Fleetwood and Lamprecht, is out, and the Argentine smashes the ball down the middle of the fairway and he’ll look to snatch the outright lead soon.

Dustin Johnson (+3) blazes out to the left rough, not what he needs to start the day.

Notable morning tee times

08:25 , Luke Baker

Some players are out on the course already for round 2 but here are some notable tee times later this morning, including Rory McIlroy

0947 Viktor Hovland (Nor), Tony Finau (USA), Justin Thomas (USA)

0958 Rory McIlroy (NIR), Jon Rahm (Esp), Justin Rose (Eng)

Matt Wallace (+4) is out, with plenty of work to do.

Otaegui is the best player based on the leaderboard, the Spaniard is -4 and already through two holes.

Here’s a reminder how the top of the leaderboard looked overnight. It makes very pretty reading for Tommy Fleetwood.

-3 Cink, Clark, Noren, Homa, Sharma, Stewart

-2 Spieth, Jordan, Migliozzi, SW Kim, Bjork, Wilson

The Open 2023: Tee times and schedule for Round 2

07:40 , Luke Baker

Tommy Fleetwood will look to continue his impressive play in round 2 after he rode a wave of home support to the top of the leaderboard and Rory McIlroy battled back from a poor start in the Open Championship on Thursday.

Roared on by a partisan crowd at Royal Liverpool, Fleetwood carded an opening 66 to share the clubhouse lead with South African amateur Christo Lamprecht and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo on five under par.

Antoine Rozner, Adrian Otaegui and Brian Harman are all a shot behind, with former champion Stewart Cink – who denied Tom Watson a fairytale victory in 2009 – part of a group on three under which includes US Open champion Wyndham Clark.

McIlroy, who lifted the Claret Jug at Hoylake in 2014, was two over par after 13 holes before making birdies on the 14th and 15th and a crucial par on the 18th after needing two shots to escape a greenside bunker to end at level-par.

It is unlikely that McIlroy was aware of the statistic that 50 of the last 52 Open champions have been within five shots of the lead after round one, but a fist pump suggested he certainly felt it was an important finish.
