Oneonta rolls to 9-0 win over Chenango Valley in baseball season opener

Mar. 26—The Oneonta baseball team opened its 2024 season in dominant fashion Tuesday with a 9-0 road win against Chenango Valley.

Bruce Mistler, Grayson Brockington and Matt Rigas threw a combined two-hit shutout while racking up nine strikeouts as a trio.

Britten Zeh led the offense with three hits and two RBI while Nolan Stark had two hits. Zeh, Stark, Mistler, Brockington, Jameson Brown and Maddox Imperato each had a double in the win.

The Yellowjackets will be back on the road Wednesday when they take on Seton Catholic at Conlon Field.

SOFTBALL

Chenango Valley 14, Oneonta 1

The Oneonta softball team fell to Chenango Valley 14-1 on the road in its season opener Tuesday.

Logan Jipson went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI while Izzy Giacomelli went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the loss.

Ivy Tice struck out four over four innings for the Yellowjackets.

Oneonta will visit Seton Catholic Wednesday.

Schenevus 26, Walton/Downsville 0

Schenevus opened its season with a 26-0 victory over Walton/Downsville Tuesday that was powered by a 15-run second inning.

Autumn Burton picked up the win for the Lady Dragons, striking out four while allowing one hit and three walks. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple, three RBI and four runs scored.

Amber Burton added two hits in the win while Leah Brundege notched a double.

Schenevus is off until Tuesday, April 9 when it hosts Franklin while W/D hosts Delhi this Thursday.

TENNIS

The Margaretville tennis team swept Andes in a doubleheader Monday winning both matches 3-1.

Tristan McVitty, Conner Hill and Alex Garcia each won two singles matches on the day for the Blue Devils.

Margaretville will be off until Thursday, April 11 when it hosts Windham-Ashland-Jewett.

Oneonta 5, Susquehanna Valley 2 (Monday)

The Oneonta tennis team defeated Susquehanna Valley 5-2 in its season-opening match Monday.

The Yellowjackets swept the doubles matches, receiving victories from the duos of Simmone Segal and Isaac Wooden, Justin Hultman and Stephen Mendez, and Brighton Logue and Ibraheem Khan.

Winning in singles play for OHS were Dylan Shaughnessy and Caleb Christman.

Oneonta will host Norwich in Wilber Park Wednesday.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

SUNY Oneonta 22, SUNY Potsdam 14

The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team took down SUNY Potsdam 22-14 on the road Tuesday in its SUNYAC opener.

The game went into halftime tied at 10 before the Red Dragons pulled away with six goals in the third and fourth quarters.

Lauren Mancini led the way with seven goals and two assists while Marissa Evans scored four goals, Lindsey Townes added three goals and an assist and Cassidy Moore, Elizabeth Doherty, Margaret Byrne and Ellie Downey each scored twice in the win.

Julia Hawkins and Courtney Gallagher tallied eight and two saves, respectively, for the Red Dragons.

Oneonta (2-4 overall, 1-0 SUNYAC) will visit Oswego Saturday.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team fell to Cortland 6-5 at home Tuesday.

Cortland took a 6-1 lead in the seventh inning before Oneonta cut it to 6-5 with three in the seventh and one in the eighth but were unable to complete the comeback in the ninth.

Anthony Foglia and Logan Hutter each tallied two hits while Liam Kaseta drove in two runs in the loss.

Kyle Rosenberger, Logan Carriero, Tom Roefaro and Derek Shea combined to strike out five for Oneonta.

Oneonta (7-10 overall, 0-3 SUNYAC) will host Oswego Friday.
