On3 Sports ranks the top available players in the transfer portal

The post-spring round of the transfer portal has produced quality free agents across the country. Many of those players are tied to the state of Texas and the Big 12 conference.

On3 Sports ranked the Top 10 best available players in the transfer portal on Wednesday. There are several familiar names.

Georgia defensive tackle Bear Alexander leads the way after starting on the Bulldogs’ national championship winning team last season. Alexander was high school teammates with three Longhorns at Denton Ryan High School, but we don’t expect Texas to win his recruitment.

Texas transfer wide receiver Brenen Thompson and former Texas defender Byron Vaughns make the cut. It’s uncertain if Texas burnt the bridge with Vaughns or if both parties would consider a reunion. Nevertheless, the productive edge rusher should be one of the more popular transfers remaining.

TCU transfer receiver Jordan Hudson and former Cincinnati linebacker Jaheim Thomas depart their respective Big 12 squads in what could be huge losses for both teams.

Here’s a look at On3 Sports’ top available players in the transfer portal at this time.

Bear Alexander

Prepare for a wild bidding war for the big-time defensive tackle from Denton, Texas. Many believe Alexander is most likely headed to USC, but the Trojans could see competition for the massive interior presence.

Jordan Hudson

Chris Jones-USA TODAY Sports

Jordan Hudson is a big-time momentum changer for one future program. The former elite receiver prospect appears to be the best in the portal at his position. SMU probably won’t be the only team after Hudson this offseason.

Jalil Tucker

Sports Oregon Spring Practice

On3 is surprisingly high on Tucker’s impact this offseason. Despite not much production to this point, the cornerback was once a high four-star prospect in high school and 247Sports’ No. 75 overall player in the 2022 class.

Brenen Thompson

Brenen isn’t the most proven player in the portal, but he has some of the highest upside. His elite speed could be an asset to his new team. It’s likely a handful of Big 12 teams should be familiar with his game enough to work for a commitment.

Var'Keyes Gumms

Daniel Dunn-USA TODAY Sports

Staying in the state of Texas, Var’Keyes Gumms is a player to watch in the portal. The undersized tight end appears to be On3’s top player at his position.

Emmanuel Pregnon

Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

Wyoming appears set to lose a skilled offensive lineman in Emmanuel Pregnon. Texas has been a beneficiary of Wyoming development in recent seasons with 2022 transfer receiver Isaiah Neyor. Albeit, the team appears set at offensive lineman.

Jeffery Clark

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Smaller school playmakers are perhaps easier to spot on film against lesser competition. Apparently Jeffery Clark’s production caught On3’s attention. Teams in need of defensive line help could reach out to Clark over the next few months.

Jaheim Thomas

Ncaaf Tulane Green Wave At Cincinnati Bearcats Nov 25 0140

70 total tackles might not seem like much compared to Jaylan Ford’s triple-digit tackle season last year. But make no mistake, his presence could be greatly missed at Cincinnati. It’s uncertain who Texas will pursue at linebacker, but the position seems to be one where they could add a veteran player.

Cam'Ron Johnson

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Houston was already in for a tough season prior to Johnson’s portal announcement. The team will now adjust to its new conference without the talented tackle. One would imagine Johnson will see interest from several teams.

Byron Vaughns

Chris Jones-USA TODAY Sports

Vaughns has made a name for himself at Utah State since leaving Austin. High production at a premium position should command interest from teams across the country.
