Oklahoma State vs. Arizona State football live updates

Final: OSU 27, Arizona State 15

The most pleasant sights of the night were Ollie Gordon and Brennan Presley running in the open field.

Gordon’s rushing set up a go-ahead touchdown and breathed life into the Oklahoma State offense, then Presley slammed the door on a 27-15 win over Arizona State with his wide-open 16-yard touchdown catch on Saturday night at Mountain America Stadium.

The Cowboy offense sputtered for much of the first half, but came to life early in the second — thanks in large part to Gordon, who had 47 yards on a 60-yard touchdown drive. And the defense shut out the Sun Devils after halftime to improve the Pokes to 2-0 on the young season.

Gordon and Gundy give OSU lead

After rushing for zero yards in 12 carries in the first half, the OSU run game came alive in the third quarter.

Ollie Gordon rushed four times for 47 yards on a touchdown drive that covered 60 yards. The Cowboys also benefited from a defensive holding penalty that wiped out an Arizona State sack.

Gunnar Gundy zipped a pass to De’Zhaun Stribling for a 3-yard touchdown that gave OSU a 17-15 lead with 9:09 left in the third quarter.

Alex Hale hits career long field goal

Entering the season, Alex Hale hadn’t made a field goal of 40-plus yards since the second week of the 2020 season, when he was good from 44 yards against West Virginia.

Last week, he made a career-long 45-yarder against Central Arkansas. And on Saturday, he boosted that career mark by seven yards.

Midway through the second quarter, the super-senior from Australia hit a 52-yarder that brought the Cowboys within 15-10.

Each team had one more possession, but that's the way the game went to halftime, with the Sun Devils hanging onto a five-point lead.

OSU ties it, Sun Devils answer

Blessed with good field position after an Arizona State punt went out of bounds at the Sun Devil 43, Oklahoma State drove quickly for a touchdown that tied the game, but Arizona State answered immediately for a 15-7 lead early in the second quarter.

OSU quarterback Alan Bowman, playing his fourth series of the game, twice hit Jaden Bray on first-down throws on the 43-yard touchdown drive. The second one got the ball to the 3-yard line, and moments later, running back Ollie Gordon burst through a hole for the tying score.

But Arizona State needed just four plays to respond. Jaden Rashada hit a wide-open Elijah Badger for a 65-yard touchdown. Then, after OSU was flagged for offsides on the extra point, the Sun Devils opted for a two-point conversion, which was run in by Cameron Skattabo for a 15-7 ASU lead with 10:07 left in the first half.

First quarter: Sun Devils strike first

Tackling issues flared up for Oklahoma State early in the game as Arizona State took a 7-0 lead on a 13-yard touchdown run by Cameron Skattabo.

The 5-foot-10, 225-pound running back took a direct snap, bounced off a defender and into open field for the TD run with 4:28 left in the first quarter.

The Cowboys managed a first down on each of their first two possessions, but no more than that. Super-senior Alan Bowman got the start at quarterback for the Pokes.

Pregame injury update: Cowboys down two veterans

Oklahoma State will be without one key player on each side of the ball in its first road game of the year, at Arizona State, which will kick off at 9:30 p.m. Saturday from Mountain American Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.

Starting right tackle Jake Springfield suffered an ankle injury in last week’s season opener and is not expected to play, according to OSU radio voice Dave Hunziker on Cowboys’ pregame show. The redshirt senior lineman was replaced by transfer Dalton Cooper.

Additionally on the offensive line, starting right guard Preston Wilson is expected to play, but it is unclear how much. He missed last week’s game because of non-football reasons.

Defensively, super-senior middle linebacker Justin Wright suffered an injury last week and posted on social media that he will be out the next few weeks.

It remains to be seen who will start at quarterback for the Cowboys, who played all three — Garret Rangel, Alan Bowman and Gunnar Gundy — last week.
