Oklahoma high school basketball: A look at week-long tournaments outside OKC metro

It’s time for the biggest regular-season tournament week in Oklahoma high school basketball.

Across the state, girls and boys basketball teams are competing in tradition-rich annual tournaments. Here’s a look at the events that start Monday.

Bryan County Tournament

When: Monday-Saturday

Where: Monday-Tuesday at Boswell and Bennington, Thursday-Saturday at Southeastern State

Top teams: Caddo is the favorite in the boys and girls brackets. The Bruins won last season’s Class A boys state championship. This year, senior star DJ Dill leads Caddo with 22 points and seven rebounds per game.

Caddo finished as last year’s Class A girls runner-up, and Texas softball commit Jaycie Nichols has continued to star for the Bruins on the basketball court with 20 points per game. OU softball signee Kadey Lee McKay is Caddo’s second-leading basketball scorer.

Caddo County Tournament

When: Monday-Saturday

Where: Anadarko

Top teams: Fort Cobb-Broxton, the defending Class B boys state champion, is the team to beat. Senior guard Kray Rogers recently set a program record with 47 points against Central High. On the girls side, Cyril rolls into the tournament with a 13-1 record.

Grady County Tournament

When: Monday-Saturday

Where: Alex

City-area contenders: Dibble, Lexington, Minco

Top teams: Although Minco’s girls team arrives with a losing record, the Bulldogs have already defeated three Grady County Tournament contenders this season. Their résumé features wins against Amber-Pocasset, Alex and Rush Springs.

On the boys side, Amber-Pocasset had recent success against tournament foes. The Panthers open the tournament against Rush Springs, a team they cruised past, 61-30, in December.

Sixty-Six Conference Tournament

When: postponed to Thursday-Saturday

Where: Prague

City-area contenders: Chandler, McLoud, Meeker

Top teams: On the boys side, top-seeded McLoud enters the tournament with an 11-2 record and eight-game win streak. Chandler (9-3) is young but building with twin freshmen Jaydan and Jordan Denson. Jordan had 35 points and 11 rebounds against Seminole in December.

In the girls bracket, top-seeded Okemah’s 6-5 record doesn’t fully reflect the team’s skill level. Three of the Class 2A Panthers’ losses came to 6A programs in the Mustang Bank7 Holiday Classic, so they’ve prepared for this tournament with tough competition.
