Nick Chubb knee update: Latest information on former Georgia running back's brutal injury

It's always terrible to see an injury, but longtime NFL fans know not all injuries are created equal.

Few are more familiar with that reality than Georgia football fans, who saw Nick Chubb suffer a devastating knee injury at Neyland Stadium in 2015. Week 2's "Monday Night Football" matchup between the Browns and Steelers saw Chubb relive that terrible injury, with the star running back again being on the receiving end of a blow that was bad enough for the broadcast to refrain from showing video replay of it.

The injury, which of course is expected to have Chubb out for the rest of the season, was to the same knee he hurt in college. The NFL world was naturally shaken by his exit, with one of the NFL's best young backs being sidelined for the season before the year really got going.

Chubb's injury against Tennessee came as he was looking to break Herschel Walker's record of 13 straight 100-yard games. This one comes after a 108-yard Week 1 performance against the Bengals.

Nick Chubb knee injury update

Nick Chubb suffered a devastating hit to his knee on Monday that came from Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

As Chubb was being dragged to the ground, Fitzpatrick threw his body at Chubb, which led to the running back's knee being pushed against the momentum carrying him forward. Chubb was carted off after the injury, with the local crowd chanting his name in solidarity.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said in his postgame news conference that Chubb suffered a "significant" knee injury and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Nick Chubb MRI result

Stefanski and the Browns have not yet announced Chubb's MRI result, but the expectation is significant damage to Chubb's knee and a season-ending prognosis.

As of Wednesday, the Browns had not released official word on Chubb's status. However, Mary Kay Cabot reported Chubb will indeed be placed on IR. Cleveland confirmed he would miss the season on Wednesday afternoon.

The Browns also moved to reunite with running back Kareem Hunt, further indicating the severity of Chubb's injury.

Update (Saturday, Sept. 23): According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the belief is that Chubb only tore his MCL, and that his ACL was only stretched — not torn — from Fitzpatrick's hit. Schefter also reported the injury is not believed to be career-ending.

"I never would bet against Nick Chubb," one source told Schefter of the All-Pro running back.

Nick Chubb injury from college

In Week 6 of Georgia's 2015 season, Chubb and the Bulldogs rolled into Knoxville, Tennessee to take on the Volunteers.

On his first carry of the game, Chubb took a run outside before being knocked out of bounds by Emmanuel Moseley. A second hit from linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin kept Chubb on the ground before the running back was tended to by Georgia training staff.

At the time of the injury, CBS sideline reporter Allie LaForce reported Chubb had briefly lost consciousness on his way to the cart. The Bulldogs running back suffered a torn MCL, PCL, LCL, a dislocated knee and a torn hamstring — or as he put it to Ryan Clark on "The Pivot Podcast," "everything in my left knee except my ACL and my MCL."

Chubb was able to rehabilitate himself enough to play in the 2016 season, where he took 224 carries for 1,130 yards. Chubb had five 100-yard games and a 200-yard game in his first game back against North Carolina.

Chubb is under contract with the Browns through the 2024 season. As he starts along his road to recovery again, he'll undoubtedly try to replicate that first return.
