Nick Bosa contract details: Former OSU star becomes NFL's highest-paid defensive player

After threatening to hold out into the 2023 NFL season, Nick Bosa signed to a record-setting extension with the 49ers on Wednesday, making the former Ohio State standout the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

Despite the high price tag, locking up one of the best defensive players in the league was a big priority for the 49ers. Bosa is coming off his third Pro Bowl and first All-Pro season in which he led the league with 18.5 sacks. He also tallied 48 quarterback hits, 19 tackles for loss, 51 combined tackles and two forced fumbles. Bosa was named AP Defensive Player of the Year and was sixth in overall NFL MVP voting: the highest-voted of any defensive player.

The 49ers selected the former Buckeye second overall in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Bosa topped Aaron Donald's AAV of $31.67 million, agreed to in 2022 as part of Donald's contract restructure. Khalil Mack was the highest-paid player by total contract value with $141 million, and Bosa earns almost $30 million more than that in his new deal (which is also a year shorter). Bosa also secured the most guaranteed money by a significant margin, $20 million more than his older brother Joey got in his deal with the Chargers.
