Trey Mancini's mom went nuts after he homered for his first MLB hit

Trey Mancini, a 24-year-old first baseman, was the Baltimore Orioles’ No. 5 prospect until Sunday. That’s the day the Orioles called him up to help them in their very competitive AL East pennant race. So no pressure, right? This is a totally easy time for a prospect to be called up. (Nope, not even a little bit.)

But the pressure of the pennant race and the wild-card race didn’t seem to get to him at all, because for the very first hit in his major league debut on Tuesday, he did something that many prospects dream of doing.

He hit a home run.

Mancini did it in the fifth inning of the Orioles’ game against the Boston Red Sox. He saw two pitches from Eduardo Rodriguez before squaring up the third and sending it to left center field at Camden Yards. And it went deep, too, landing in the visitors bullpen.

The Orioles bullpen went nuts, and they weren’t the only ones. The crowd went crazy as Mancini absolutely zipped around the bases. They weren’t done with him once he got back to the dugout, though. They demanded a curtain call from the rookie, and he obliged.

The crowd was delighted and Mancini’s teammates were thrilled, but no one was happier than Trey’s mom, Beth. When her son hit a homer in his very first MLB at-bat, she was full of so much joy that I thought she might start floating off the ground.

Beth didn’t just get to see her son’s first ever hit and homer. She also got the ball.

It didn’t matter that the Orioles lost 5-2. For Trey Mancini and his mom, Tuesday night was pretty much as good as it gets.
