We often forget that NFL players deal with real-life problems when they aren’t on the field.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III has been the subject of a lot of preseason chatter, centered on the possibility of him turning around his career with the Cleveland Browns. But he has been dealing with a lot off the field too, as the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that he’s in the process of filing for a divorce.

Griffin had a high-profile wedding three years ago to Rebecca Liddicoat, who he met at Baylor. The couple had a child in May of 2015.

The Plain Dealer’s story said Browns players “have complimented Griffin on his focus and dedication to the job.” Griffin, the 2012 NFL offensive rookie of the year, signed with the Browns after his up-and-down Washington Redskins career ended. Griffin didn’t play in a game last year, and watched from the bench while Kirk Cousins led Washington to a playoff berth.

The focus has been on Griffin being able to resurrect his career this season, while learning a new offense and getting on the same page with his new teammates. He started Cleveland’s first preseason game, and had a decent performance. Now we understand Griffin’s challenge has been even tougher than it appeared on the surface.
